Another climb along the river to visit with the old growth stand at the top. There's more old growth out there, beyond the end of the trail, but this is the bit they'll let the public visit. While among the giants, I checked out the small.

Through second growth, on the way to the old growth along the Elk River Trail.

Trail through a forest with a small bridge spanning a tiny seasonal stream. A large stump and large tree are visible with many others not so big.

Into the old grow California coastal redwood forest.

A big tree with a scar and huge ferns growing from its sides sits to the right. Other huge trees are visible along with some that are just big.

Turkey tail mushrooms.

Shelf fungus grows from the side of a stick on the forest floor. It must have rolled at some point after the mushrooms started, because they changed their growth and now it looks a little like an ear is sticking out of the middle of a couple.

The little black spots on the underside of the third mushroom turned out to be grubs(?) crawling about the pores under magnification!

Yesterday, I took the trail in the Headwaters Forest Reserve 5 miles to the little bit of old growth redwoods. Once there, surrounded by giants, I took pictures of the tiny lichen growing on the burned wood of one particular tree.

Okay, I may have taken some pictures of the trees too, but they look pretty similar to all the other visits to these trees. And one of these isn't actually lichen.
