Rare Moderate Risk (4/5) issued for Mid-Atlantic as severe thunderstorms raise threat of damaging winds and tornadoes

A Moderate Risk (Level 4 of 5) for severe thunderstorms has been issued across parts of the Mid-Atlantic United States for Monday, March 16, 2026, as a powerful storm system affects much of the country. Fast-moving thunderstorms may become widespread during the afternoon and evening from the Carolinas into Virginia and Maryland, bringing damaging wind gusts and a few tornadoes, with the potential for a couple of storms to produce strong and long-track tornadoes.

Mesoscale Discussion 0224
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0547 PM CDT Wed Mar 11 2026

Areas affected...Northern Mid-Atlantic

Concerning...Severe potential...Watch possible

Valid 112247Z - 120045Z

Probability of Watch Issuance...60 percent

SUMMARY...Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to persist
into the early evening hours across the northern Mid Atlantic
states, with damaging winds and perhaps hail being the primary
threats.

DISCUSSION...Strong to severe thunderstorms on the eastern edge of
WW 45 will pose a threat for primarily damaging straight-line winds
into the early evening hours. There is still a small window of
tornado potential through at least 8 PM EDT, though forecast
profiles ahead of the ongoing storms show a rapid stabilization of
the nocturnal boundary layer. Even with this stabilization, there is
sufficient MUCAPE and deep-layer vertical shear to support a
continued severe threat as storms make the transition from
surface-based to elevated. Some potential for hail exists, though is
expected to largely remain at or below 1.0 inches in diameter.

Looks like I'll be up every couple of hours tonight to maintain egress! I have other doors, but I'd like to be able to get out the front. And if the wind shifts, I'll have to do this with the kitchen door as well.
Basically, open the inner door (opens in), then swing the screen door out to keep it from getting iced closed by the buildup of snow.
It's already about 3 inches and the forecast is for 10-14 total overnight. And another measly 3-5 tomorrow.

Here's my front door, looking out the dining room window. It's already snowing, just a dusting so far. The metal ramp surface, top of mailbox and metal ramp railings are covered in snow, but it's not deep. Beyond the red brick wall of the house is a shrub covered in snow and a white sky. Here's my front door, looking out the dining room window. It's nighttime and the exterior light is on. It's been snowing for a few hours, and about 2 inches deep. The metal ramp surface is covered in snow, up to the top of the lip edging. Now there's a mound of snow on the mailbox.
There's an arc of shallower snow in front of the door where I've already opened it and pushed some snow aside, but the surface is covered again, and snow is accumulating along the frame of the exterior "screen" door (which is actually glassed in).
Beyond the red brick wall of the house is a shrub rather heavy with snow and the dark beyond.Looking out the front door from the inside as I open the screen door and push the snow aside. You can see how deep it is, about 2-3 inches now.
Beyond the door is a landing. To the left, a ramp leads down to the driveway, and straight ahead there is one step down and then the driveway. Shadows of the trash bins in front of the garage, and a snowy white surface of the driveway which seems way too large at times like this! But I parked the car at the very end of the driveway so I will have only a few feet of snow to shovel to get out, not the entire length of the driveway. Aren't I clever!Looking out the glassed-in screen door at a snowy driveway scene. Water and snow on the glass from the blowing, sparkly droplets, shadows on a snowy field of white (the driveway, actually, not a field). It's pretty from the inside.

Hype for the Future 112M: Borough of Mifflintown, Pennsylvania

Overview The Borough of Mifflintown is located within Juniata County, Pennsylvania, serving as the county seat and located directly along the Juniata River, a notable tributary of the Susquehanna River through the region. Today, the community is of minimal population, with recent counts smaller than two thousand total residents within borough limits. Even immediately outside the borough proper, into Fermanagh Township largely to the north, is a very sparsely populated area of approximately a […]

a wider aerial shot of the same neighborhood, revealing a suburban landscape blanketed in snow under a grey, hazy sky. The detached grey garage seen in the first image is prominent in the foreground on the left, surrounded by small, round bushes and evergreen shrubs. To the right, the large leafless tree and the edge of the beige house from the previous image are visible. Beyond the immediate foreground, several other houses are scattered across the scene, painted in neutral tones of beige, white, and grey, all with snow-laden roofs. Driveways contain parked trucks and cars, and property lines are marked by fences or clusters of trees. Dark green evergreen trees and bare deciduous trees are interspersed throughout the neighborhood, breaking up the expanse of white snow. The background fades into a misty grey, obscuring distant hills or trees and suggesting continuing winter weather.a high-angle aerial view of a snowy residential backyard on an overcast winter day. The ground is covered in a thick, uniform layer of white snow. In the center-left of the yard, two large rectangular arrays of ground-mounted solar panels sit side-by-side, their angled surfaces almost entirely obscured by snow. To the right of these panels is an oval above-ground swimming pool, covered for the winter with a dark tarp that is also holding a layer of snow. Behind the pool and solar panels stands a two-story beige house with a dark, snow-covered roof. A wooden deck extends from the second floor, holding snow-dusted patio furniture and a grill, while the area underneath the deck appears dark and used for storage. A black car is parked to the right of the house. To the left, a wooden fence runs diagonally toward a detached grey garage or outbuilding in the upper left corner. A single large, leafless tree stands in the middle of the yard, its dark, intricate branches contrasting sharply with the white snow.

PSA: If you are fortunate enough to have emergency backup systems in place for an extended winter power outage, remind your friends & family that they can come to your house (if/when safe to drive) to stay warm or charge devices, etc.

We've done just that. With multiple large home batteries, and a fossil fuel generator (solar doesn't work so well under 15" of snow 😆) and propane heat, we may be a bit chilly - but not frozen!

Do you have an elderly neighbor? Don't forget them! Remember, even gas/oil furnaces require electricity to run.

In the path of the monster winter storm? Thinking you might run your central HVAC on generator or battery power?

Chances are, unless you have a really big generator or inverter, it won't work. Heat pumps must defrost periodically, and that can be 10kW on up to 20kW depending on the system size. That would instantly overload your backup system and shut it down.

You're better off with portable heaters and electric blankets. You can also get indoor rated propane heaters, which could be just enough to stop pipes from freezing, etc. But if you do that, do yourself a favor and install some monoxide alarms as well.

Stay safe.

This image displays a stack of four large, black, rectangular battery modules, repurposed telecom battery packs, arranged in a two-by-two grid on a concrete floor. Each module features metal grab handles on the vertical edges and various electrical terminals on the front face. The top-left module is fitted with a prominent red device labeled "DALY BMS-250A," which is a battery management system equipped with a small cooling fan. A complex array of wiring is visible, including thick red and blue power cables connecting the BMS to the terminals, as well as a bundle of thinner, multi-colored wires for sensing voltage. Thick black cables run horizontally across the setup, linking the positive and negative terminals of the modules on the right to those on the left, suggesting a series connection. Warning stickers with yellow triangles and the text "WARNING CAREFUL WITH ELECTRICITY" are affixed to the front of the modules near the terminals.A bright lime green and black Greenworks Pro electric snow blower is shown in profile, resting on a concrete floor in a garage setting. The machine features large, rugged black tires with deep treads and green rims, supporting a main body labeled "Ultrapower 60V." The front intake housing is green and marked "24 Inch Power Steer" with a black drift cutter bar attached to the side. Rising from the center is a tall, black discharge chute topped with a motor housing that reads "200 Degree Rotation." Black handlebars extend toward the back right, and a small brush tool is clipped onto the green housing near a headlight.A medium shot at eye level captures the front view of a Gasland brand portable indoor gas heater, sitting on a concrete garage floor. The heater is primarily black with a matte finish. At the top, a rounded, dark gray cowling curves over the unit, displaying the brand name "GASLAND" in white sans-serif capital letters; the first 'A' is stylized with a flame icon inside it. Below the brand name is a horizontal row of vertical ventilation slots. The central portion of the heater is dominated by a large, rectangular heating element protected by a shiny, chrome-plated wire safety guard. The heating element consists of three white ceramic panels with a grid-like texture, intended to glow when the unit is active, though they are currently off. Below the ceramic panels, a horizontal metal reflector plate runs across the width. The unit has a sturdy, boxy shape with rounded corners and sits on small black wheels, partially visible at the bottom. This medium-shot, eye-level photograph shows a portable generator, identified by branding as an ETQ model, sitting on a gray concrete floor, in a garage. The generator is built into a black tubular metal frame and is topped with a blue fuel tank, which is largely covered by a custom-fitted black fabric cover secured with clips. The front of the generator features a black engine on the left with a circular, slatted recoil starter cover bearing a white "ETQ 14HP" sticker, and a rectangular black air filter housing nearby. To the right is the control panel, densely packed with various electrical outlets, circuit breakers, a red engine switch, and text indicating "8250 WATTS SURGE" and "7250 WATTS CONTINUOUS." Below the panel, a black battery box and wiring are visible, and the unit rests on large, knobby black tires on the right side, with the frame acting as a stand on the left. A small, yellowish inline fuel filter is visible connected to a hose near the engine block.
