More time spent on our cozy little island today, spelunking the depths for minerals, sailing across the water for exotic crops, and generally gathering materials to carve out a place to call home for ourselves.

It took a while to fully grasp this, but at this point in the playthrough I wasn't aware that I was playing an Expert Pack. I thought this pack was focused on providing a low-tech survival sim. What I ended up getting was grindy and a bit Sisyphean, especially once I got into the early/mid tech phase of the pack, but we'll get to that.

Maybe someday I'll find the perfect pack for me...

Me ... currently plugging figures into a massive spreadsheet and doing ACTUAL FRICKING CALCULUS to find the optimal ratio for a modded #Create Mod Biofuel powered steam boiler and testing setups for my own modpack on a creative flatworld.

Everyone "erm... you need a life !!"

Me "I know, I know!" XD

so many variables to tweak. I add another boiler and the bio fuel breaks even, but everything else runs out. I duplicate those and I get over production of intermediate resources. Hence the spreadsheet(s) and calculus to find the sweet-spot :D

We're back again today with another look at the challenging yet fascinating modpack, Underdog. Fun fact, when I was planning on making the sequel to There Will Be Blood, this sort of emphasis on environmental difficulty rather than brutal combat that it's predecessor focused on was exactly what I was going for, and I really enjoyed these early stages of the pack! Honestly I wouldn't mind returning if it weren't for changes that occurred due to pack updates, but we'll get to those later.

All in all, the pack does what it sets out to, and I have since found a different pack that has grabbed my attention. Maybe someday we'll do some streams of that...

We jump forward in time for today's VOD, leaving the world of ancient China behind for something more personal, less frantic.

We found a modpack that, at least early on, felt very much like the ideal pack I intended on making when I built There Will Be Blood years prior. Without mobs and combat making life difficult, the environment and systemic mechanics are left to drive the difficulty, and in some ways it does.

It's a slow burn for sure, but this pack definitely stood out and was engaging to play through for a time.

Does anyone have any #Minecraft #Modpack recommendations that add to your own personal sandbox projects, rather than giving you a factory game-style pre-determined vertical progression?

I really enjoy the sandbox gameplay loop of vanilla Minecraft worlds where I keep on doing personal projects I come up with myself (build lighthouse, build railway network, build automatic mob farm, whatever). The vanilla game itself doesn't really give me 'tasks' other than, like, tool tiers I guess.

I feel like in contrast, most mods and modpacks have a pre-determined progression path that you have to follow. Ore doubling to tripling to quadrupling. Build machine X or you can't have machine Y. Grind for N resources to continue.

It really took away all the creative fun I had and turned the game into a checklist-like chore.

I'm looking for modpacks or mods that work similarly to redstone in terms of #GameDesign. Easy to acquire, non-gated, infinite applications to your own projects, just a tool in your sandbox.

Some mods are like that, such as #Create. Some mods usually labelled Vanilla+ also fit the bill. But I don't know of many modpacks that really add only this kind of content.

I don't just want decoration mods, QoL/performance mods and tweaks, I want content, tech and magic.

A good example is the old storage mod #ArcaneArchives. Just a simple, non-gated enhancement to storage.

Any recommendations?

Game modding is so stupid now with AI bullshit everywhere!

Like, I want a #Minecraft modpack that someone actually took time to design, balance and test. Not just something thrown together without a second thought.

It used to be relatively easy to tell apart good from bad mods. Good mods were passion projects with creative names, art and descriptions, because they were collaborative efforts. Bad ones were, like, called "Ultimate Epic Minecraft Best", with a shitty generic image as their logo and no description.

But now, a significant amount of mods and modpacks have the same AI generated logos and/or descriptions that all sound perfect and mature.

The worst thing about this?

Both good and bad mods and modpacks now come with AI logos/descriptions! There's some really good mods that use AI for logos and descriptions because the creator isn't a native speaker or a 'good writer'. It's like that in every game now!

You can no longer tell apart a passion project from random trash now.
Back in the day, passion project creators simply asked other community members to create art for them or to refine their description. It was just a part of how the modding community worked and thrived! Nowadays, they'll just use AI because it's convenient.

How am I supposed to know whether someone just used ChatGPT to write a pack description for their excellent modpack because their English sucks, or whether they're a kid who AI generated the whole modpack as a financial grift?

Ugh.
