Notice: Breaking change in v4.5.0 (requests to internal IP addresses disallowed)
We are publishing a notice today to bring to attention an unintentional breaking change that could affect some users of NodeBB.
v4.5.0 contained an update to src/request.js that calls a DNS resolver to ensure that the destination address is not a reserved IP address (e.g. 192.168..., 127.0..)
This change was introduced in order to close off any potential for Server-Side Request Forgery for any calls made within the NodeBB codebase. [...]
The next version of NodeBB (v4.10.0) will ship with the ability to set alt-text with images :writing_hand:
While this was already natively supported in-site, the alt text wasn't federated out until now.
Thanks to @kirk@social.coop who filed the original bug report (a long time ago actually :grimacing:)
Federation: Community Kickstart Guide
The hardest part of building a community is getting your users. If you don't have users, you don't have content, and if you don't have content, users won't join your forum. This chicken-and-egg game leads to many communities closing down due to lack of usage. Federation allows you to bypass this step by allowing you to "adopt" the fediverse as a source of content, so you don't have to worry about retaining users, but just creating content.
NodeBB ships with a couple of powerful features that allow you to jump-start any new forum with live conversation and discussion with only a few clicks. This guide introduces you to these tools and teaches you how to use them.

NodeBB v4.9.0 — A Whole New /world!
Hello all!
(Sorry, I could not resist with the title )
Today we are releasing NodeBB v4.9.0, on a Friday, toward the end of the day, because we like having our weekends ruined.
As usual, we recommend you update to this stable version of NodeBB, not least because it fixes a federation issue accidentally introduced last month.
There are a bunch of new features and usability improvements here, for both end users and admins. Federation improvements abound, as well as a few moderation upgrades. As usual, we fixed a ton of bugs, and even a couple open issues from the 2010s :scream:
Here is a list of the changes and new features you should expect to see! [...]
Federation: Why does my content look different on other platforms?
Federating content to other platforms comes with its own share of surprises. Sometimes your content is faithfully shared and rendered the way you mean it to be, and sometimes it is remixed and changed in ways you didn't expect.
It's up to the receiving end as to how to best represent your content, but NodeBB will always try its best to send a version of your content out that looks like what is posted on the forum itself.

Federation: What is it and how does it work?
It is possible for NodeBBs to talk with each other. In fact, not only can two NodeBB forums see and share conversations, you can also connect with other websites that can federate.

Easily Deploy #NodeBB Community #Forum on #Ubuntu #VPS

I've said that I recently started forums on my own website, right? They run on #NodeBB. I don't remember when was the last time I was using a piece of software where I could just search something up and immediately find a perfectly relevant answer. It's not surprising that as forum software, they have their own support forums.
@smallcircles I wonder if anyone has done a comparison of how heavy it is with #NodeBB or similar forum fedi structures. Maybe @julian knows.
It's about time I set up my own forums like I wanted to! Opted to go for #NodeBB, but setup, so far, is not going very well…
These days I have seed and flavorful vegetables on my mind. I'm grateful to be part of an international community with that passion. One of the places on the internet I learn the most these days is a #Discourse #forum dedicated to that topic and I wish it could federate with Mastodon and similar networks, so the conversations could take place here too. Atm you need a 500$ business plan to integrate #ActivityPub plugin.
Thanks go out to @julian@activitypub.space and the whole crew at #NodeBB for their help setting up and sponsoring the Podcasting.Chats federated-forum community.
Check them out here: https://nodebb.org if you’re looking to start a community that has more reach than a typical forum and is way better than Discord in almost every way imaginable.
Launched on #NodeBB https://Podcasting.chat! And it federates!
Hopefully it doesn't blow up when I do an update for it.
