#OldComputerChallenge next week \o/ I'll use my very first computer that I've rebuilt couple of years ago: bsandro.tech/computers/first/

Prepping for #OldComputerChallenge 2025 and I decided to overwrite my Windows XP 32bit OS with Windows XP 64bit... I do not like, going back to 32bit. There is no purpose to Windows XP 64bit, compatibility is shot.

In my warmup for #OldComputerChallenge 25, I dusted off ol' pal #RaspberryPi model B and burned #NetBSD 10 on an SD card to set it up.

It all went well (slow, but hey) but one thing that I still can't get around (that I didn't experience so much last time I tried it) is the console. Control chars get printed instead of arrow and home/end keys, no colors, etc. Hate to say it, but all in all, it feels backwards compared to a modern, full-fledged console environment of #FreeBSD or Linux. And it's starting to wear me out.

But I have a feeling that this is somehow my fault for not configuring the console properly or using the right output or something. I never had to deal with this before, so anybody knows how I can configure this so I can have a modern env in NetBSD?

What can you do nowadays with a single core and 512mb of RAM computer?

I'm about to find out...

I'll be running 15 with or maybe , and I'll be testing a bunch of stuff to see what works and what makes the computer fans turn it into a drone.

I decided to organize an Old Computer Challenge in Spanish with some friends and nerd communities I hang with :)

I'll be using an old Dell laptop with 1 core and 512 megs of RAM. It's gonna be interesting!

@neil
When I do/did the , I find/found myself mostly using terminal programs as they're usually lighter on memory. For that though, NewsBoat and Toot are too heavy, so for fedi I have a bunch of ash scripts that use curl and jq to create something akin to a client and then this year, for a feedreader, I cobbled together some script using Xidel. I have some limited writeup in these blog posts: ddlyh.smol.pub/2024-day-1 ddlyh.smol.pub/2024-day-2 .

I've come to terms with the fact that I'm not good at keeping conversations alive on the Internet. Mainly because I tend to forget that I was having one in the first place 😅 .

Even on my blog, I never finished that last post for the #OldComputerChallenge. And never came back to the #Deadnet forums to talk about my experiences.

I should finish that post, at least.

Supposedly, I should have written my last post for the #OldComputerChallenge weeks ago, but due to many problems in my life, I haven't had time. I'll try to do it over the week.
