What can you do nowadays with a single core and 512mb of RAM computer?

I'm about to find out...

I'll be running #slackware 15 with #dwm or maybe #jwm, and I'll be testing a bunch of stuff to see what works and what makes the computer fans turn it into a drone.

I'll be using an old Dell laptop with 1 core and 512 megs of RAM. It's gonna be interesting!

When I do/did the #OldComputerChallenge, I find/found myself mostly using terminal programs as they're usually lighter on memory. For that though, NewsBoat and Toot are too heavy, so for fedi I have a bunch of ash scripts that use curl and jq to create something akin to a client and then this year, for a feedreader, I cobbled together some script using Xidel. I've come to terms with the fact that I'm not good at keeping conversations alive on the Internet. Mainly because I tend to forget that I was having one in the first place 😅 .

Even on my blog, I never finished that last post for the #OldComputerChallenge. And never came back to the #Deadnet forums to talk about my experiences.

I should finish that post, at least.

Last day of the #OldComputerChallenge and I didn't have time to write my last post. I'll write it and the summary tomorrow. But I can say that this was a fun week. Many things learned and some thoughts to ponder.

So I ended up with 32-bit #Void #Linux on my #OldComputerChallenge laptop. Samba share mounted and MusikCube accessing my music library.

Now…. I just need sound to work. Yes this is taking longer than a week, but I’m enjoying utilising this old hardware :neocat_think_woozy:

Edit: and I am done! Press M to unmute in Alsamixer… I forgot everything is muted by default :neocat_facepalm:

My challenge has been a success and I think I’m going to keep my old computer out of retirement. Despite it being 16 years old I discover it can still serve my needs well!

Things that make zero sense to me in the terminal: why `set -o` SETS the option rather than UNSETS it; why `true` always exits with `false`... #oldcomputerchallenge

Another year, another time of me failing to be prepared and able to join in on the #oldcomputerchallenge .
I do have the option to do this any time. I just need to actually get that setup.

Though I really enjoy reading others experiences and in some ways live vicariously through those that do this and tell their story.
