A flow of seconds minutes hours and a breath of wind in pale branches, reflections on old roofs, a dim light in a distant window and an empty glass to conclude the day. Late evening in between the hills, a distant yet close city, pondering virtual concepts in the real world: Contexts, environments, variables. Sounds of dialup connections, remote systems, slow lines, pixel aesthetics. And always that scent of the open fields, up there on the outer road. Mental images. Until thoughts retreat into an early state of dreams. Sleep tight everyone wherever you are.

Swansea ranked among UK’s most haunted cities in new Halloween study

The research, by unoccupied home insurance specialists Alan Boswell Group, analysed paranormal reports, cemeteries, memorials, vacant properties and historic housing stock to calculate a “spooky score” for 15 UK cities.

Swansea in the top five

Swansea comes in fourth place nationally, with a spooky score of 7.6 out of 10. The city’s long history plays a big part in that ranking. Swansea is home to 287 memorials and a high proportion of older housing, with 141 properties built before 1918 for every 10,000 people. Combined with 6.8 vacant properties per 10,000 residents, it creates the kind of backdrop where ghost stories thrive.

While Swansea records fewer paranormal reports than York or Exeter, its historic buildings and cemeteries still contribute to its reputation as one of the UK’s most haunted places.

Local legends add to the chill

As Swansea Bay News has previously reported, the city and surrounding area are rich in ghostly folklore. Oystermouth Castle is said to be haunted by a “White Lady” who drifts through its medieval halls. The Dylan Thomas Theatre has long been linked with unexplained footsteps and flickering lights, while the Palace Theatre — now undergoing restoration — has its own share of eerie tales, with staff and visitors over the years reporting strange noises and shadowy figures.

Beyond the city, the Gower Peninsula has its own haunted reputation, from apparitions on windswept cliffs to inns where chilling tales have been passed down for generations. Together, these stories give Swansea’s 7.6 “spooky score” a distinctly local flavour.

National picture

Aberdeen and Bradford share the top spot in the index, each scoring 8.25, while York — often dubbed the “City of 1,000 Ghosts” — ranks third. Swansea is the only Welsh city to make the top five.

Why it matters

The study also highlights the link between vacant properties and risk. Across the UK there are more than 760,000 empty homes, with insurers warning that standard home insurance may not cover long‑term unoccupied properties.

Heath Alexander‑Bew of Alan Boswell Group said:

“If your property is empty for long periods of time, you will need unoccupied property insurance as standard home insurance policies are unlikely to cover the property — for some insurers this can be as little as 30 days.”

✨ From Open Porch to New Beginnings ✨

What was once a 100-year-old side porch in the heart of Appalachia is transforming into something new. 🌄 Once open to the wind, rain, and stories of generations past, it now has strong walls and bright windows that frame the hills beyond.

This little space is becoming the future office of *Ancestry Roads* @AncestryRoads@genealysis.social and a place where history meets the present, where family stories will be written, and where the threads of Appalachia will continue to be woven into the larger tapestry of American genealogy. 🪡📜

From weathered wood to fresh beginnings, this is more than a renovation, it’s a reminder that the past gives strength to the future.

Here’s to old bones, new walls, and all the stories waiting to be told. 💛

This image shows a small room under renovation. The floor is made of unfinished plywood subflooring with printed markings on it. The walls are partially exposed, revealing wooden studs on the right side and old horizontal wood planks on the left wall. Some of the planks are painted white but appear weathered and chipped, while others are bare wood.

The ceiling has exposed beams painted white, running diagonally upward to the left. On the right wall, there are two new rectangular windows framed in light wood. Through the glass, you can see a bright green lawn, a picnic table, and a red barn or structure in the distance under a cloudy sky.

Standing in the middle of the room is a small Yorkshire Terrier dog with tan and dark fur, facing toward the windows, seemingly curious about the view outside. This photo shows a construction scene on what was once a porch of an old house. The wooden framing for new walls has been added, with vertical studs in place but no drywall or siding yet. On the floor, there is a new white shower base set in position, indicating that this area is being transformed into a bathroom. The subfloor is plywood with black stamped markings.

To the left, the original log-and-plank exterior wall of the house is visible, with weathered white paint and an old window. A cardboard box with scraps and debris sits on the floor nearby, and a yellow power tool can be seen in the bottom corner.

Beyond the framing, you can see the yard outside. There’s green grass, a large tree, and a small white camper trailer near the wooden fence. A couple of red-and-white canopy tents are also set up, likely for shade or construction use.

Späte Sonne. Frisches Brot.

Much later again. A change of place a change of worlds, and still waiting for the soul to catch up. Calm skies invisible above sleepy trees, the sounds of meadows and creek and innumerable hidden lifeforms and a distant celebration welcoming the end of this week. Taking a deep sip, from the glass, from the night, from the mood to fill that very moment. Still restless, but at least motionless. Sleep tight everyone wherever you are.

the hardest thing to find was a curtain rod that fit the tub and space and didn't have four ceiling mounts!! (we just wanted it to open on one end at the taps. So we could pull it away from either the window or door side. Thank goodness we found this one!

We finally found it on Wayfair and it wasn't stupidly expensive and looks nice and is well made (excellent instructions!) #diy #home #oldHomes

14/n After two months of work (so far), it's looking like a house! Shingles are up to the roof on all sides of the house. Gutters are up around the porch, and along the south side of the house.

Monday should be warm, and dry, enough for some painting to get done. I'm looking forward to seeing the windows yellow instead of white.

13/n Some of the downspouts will descend alongside the enclosed brick porch. Those will be a bricky red, to avoid the clash of the blue against brick.

12/n The new gutter color, "Pacific Blue", started going up on Monday. So it's the final choice. And it's the best of the three.
