@mpjgregoire The UCP only seems committed to one of those things, perhaps because they're privatizing treatment and a revolving door program benefits those companies. This is not to mention the issues surrounding forced treatment into the hands of private companies who then have direct access to personal data of vulnerable people.

@mpjgregoire Over the last year Alberta has poured resources into treatment and that is having an effect but we could be doing a lot better if treatment and SCS were both well supported. This crisis isn't going to be solved by single solutions and I'd say we need SCS, treatment, and social supports so that people exiting treatment aren't ending up repeatedly coming back.

@mpjgregoire This is a cherry picked statistic. More useful is looking back over the last five years. In 2019 the UCP in Alberta reduced funding to supervised consumption sites and since then two big ones have closed completely. That's also the time period where Alberta's overdose death rate spiked. By comparison, during the same time frame BC basically held the line on OD deaths.

Between April 2023 and April 2024, overdose deaths declined by about 10 percent nationally to roughly 101,000, according to preliminary data published recently by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That amounted to the largest decrease on record, according to the Biden administration. Nonfatal overdoses are also down more than 10 percent.
