"#Onthisday in 1939, Pan American Airways established the first regular air mail service across the Atlantic. Passenger service followed a month later. The route included service from Port Washington, New York, to Marseilles, France, via the Azores and Lisbon, Portugal. The trip took around 36 hours of flying time for a complete total of 51 total hours with layovers. A round-trip ticket cost $675, equivalent to over $11,000 today. "Pan American Airways pioneered commercial airline service to Latin America and the Caribbean in the late 1920s and early 1930s, when air travel was first developing into a viable form of transportation. By 1930, the airline linked twenty-nine Latin American and Caribbean countries and territories with regularly scheduled airmail, passenger, and cargo flights. Pan Am’s public relations and advertising manager Daniel Rochford (1900–89) traveled extensively throughout Central America in the winter of 1930–31 and helped document Pan America’s operations from Cristóbal in the Panama Canal Zone to Guatemala, photographing PAA’s service in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, and El Salvador. "Jet streams are fast flowing westerly (moving west to east) air currents found around the world. Located in the tropopause, the layer of the atmosphere just below the stratosphere, jet streams are used in the aviation industry to shorten flying time all over the world. Ever wonder why jets frequently travel polar routes? In addition to covering a shorter distance, west to east routes may take advantage of the jet stream to further shorten flying time. Jet streams are located from 30,000 to 56,000 feet above the surface of the Earth and form at the boundaries of warm air and cold air. The strong winds, up to 200 miles an hour, are formed because of the pressure variations between the two temperatures of air. Because of the earth's rotation, the jet stream, does not move in a straight line. In November 1952, Captain Logan Scott, piloting a Pan American World Airways Boeing 377 Stratocruiser, made history by following these fast-flowing winds. Taking off from Tokyo, Japan bound for Honolulu, Hawaii, this flight flew non-stop for 3,908 miles and shaved off seven hours of flying time using the jet stream. Katsoin televisiota viikonlopulla. Näkyi meillä ensimmäisen kerran sitten viime kesän perusparannus-remontin, jonka yhteydessä joku lurjus oli piikannut antennijohdon poikki alakerran vessan lattian alta. Vian luonne selvisi vasta tämän vuoden puolella, ja perjantaina taloyhtiön valtuuttama sähkö-asentaja laittoi uuden kaapelin pintavetona eteisen tuulikaapista olohuoneen takanurkkaan. Työ kesti vajaat 6 tuntia, eikä jälki etenkään katoissa välttämättä miellytä esteetikon silmää, mutta kelpaa ja toimii.
Sitten pääasiaan: Meillä näkyy kaapelista 20 ilmaiskanavaa. Nopea selaus näytti kaikissa lähinnä vain päitä, siis *kasvoja*, aivan riippumatta siitä, mikä ohjelma tai mainos oli menossa. Luonto on kasvoja, samoin tekniikka ja tiede, puutarhoista ja sapuskoista puhumattakaan, eikä mitään informaatiota ilmeisesti voi enää välittää ilman kasvoja. Tätä en voi ymmärtää.
Mikä ihmeen pärstä-kaappaus on kuvallisessa mediassa päässyt tapahtumaan vaivihkaa? Edellisestä TV:n katselustani ei sentään ole montaakaan vuotta. Eikä vitsaus liity enää edes tuonne liikkuvan kuvan puolelle. Sosiaalistakin mediaa selatessa törmää yhä enemmän uutisiin, joissa pääasia näyttää olevan pää, joka on jotain jossain sanonut, kirjoittanut tai tehnyt. Olen kyllä kuullut henkilöitymisestä ja sen sellaisesta, mutta oikeasti hämmentää.
No, tulipa sanottua. Jatkan edelleen tekstuaalisen median kuluttamista, muun osalta preferoin ääntä, ja opettelen sulkemaan silmäni tunkeilevilta kasvoilta, jos taas joskus osun TV:mme ääreen. Mainoksia varten on onneksi mute-näppäin.
