Στο «#Gender Trouble: #Feminism and the Subversion of Identity», η #Butler Χρησιμοποιώντας ιδέες για την εξουσία και την υποκειμενοποίηση που πρωτοδιατυπώθηκαν από τον Michel Foucault στο Discipline and Punish, Michel Foucault, «Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison» (1975) και τις γλωσσικές θεωρίες του J. L. Austin, η Μπάτλερ υποστήριξε ότι το σεξ ήταν ένα αποτέλεσμα και όχι η αιτία της κοινωνικής διαφοράς φύλου και ότι η μυθοπλασία μιας σταθερής βασικής ταυτότητας φύλου διατηρήθηκε μέσω κοινωνικά εξαναγκασμένων επιτελέσεων φύλου.

Judith Butler, Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity (NY: Routledge, 1990).

Judith Butler and ‘Gender Trouble’
A major American thinker associated with post structuralist thought is Judith Butler. Trained in Continental philosophy and published on Hegel, Butler is better known for her engagement with feminist theory and as the ‘mother’ (along with English literature scholar Eve Sedgwick) of Queer Theory. In Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity, Butler explored the persistence of biological sex in feminist theory as the source and cause of the unequal social treatment and status of women. Using ideas about power and subjectification first broached by Michel Foucault in Discipline and Punish,Michel Foucault, Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison(1975) and the linguistic theories of J. L. Austin, Butler argued that sex was an effect rather than the cause of social gender difference, and that the fiction of a stable core gender identity was maintained through socially coerced performances of gender. Butler’s ideas depend greatly on the notion of “
#performativity” and she is widely credited with introducing the term into gender studies. Austin described performative words as those that both describe and produce a thing. The classic example is a minister’s statement, “I now pronounce you husband and wife,” which both describes and produces two people as married. Similarly, Butler argued that repetitive socially coerced gender performances, which aspire to replicate a normative gender ideal, actually produce the sexed body and gender identity.

In Gender Trouble, Butler also relied on deconstructionist language theory and Freudian psychoanalysis to argue that heterosexuality is structured in an ongoing series of losses stemming from a repudiation of homosexuality; as such homosexuality can be seen as constitutive of heterosexuality, necessitating its repeated repudiations. Butler embraced the Foucauldian notion that there is no “outside” to culture, and therefore resistance—even consciousness, volition, the self—to forms of oppression is always already structured in terms of that oppression. Therefore, resistance can only take the form of failed imitations of social norms, whose very failure reveals the structures of power that often masquerade as natural or inevitable. For this reason, Butler’s work has been taken up by gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people because it re-imagines sexual and gender non-conformity—not to mention the way that heterosexual and cisgender norms are often reproduced in gay and lesbian culture and relationships—as a form of resistance to a
#heteronormative society that attempts (but always fails) to naturalize the relationships among sex, gender, and sexual orientation.Judith Butler, Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity (NY: Routledge, 1990).

This extract from a recent Rob Horning newsletter left me thinking about my frustration with ‘AI realism‘ in the mode of Mark Fisher’s Capitalist Realism. Horning describes what we could think of as the impasse of atomisation:

The Verge articles take it for granted that this “we” won’t come together and will never be ready — it takes tech companies to have already achieved their basic goal of atomizing and isolating everyone into discrete but fungible units that can’t form collectivities on their own terms, that are only ever “populations” bracketed and processed into different sets by some higher controlling force. The articles assume, perhaps correctly, that the possibility of conceiving collective responsibility, of having any faith in other people to do anything other than what strikes them as most convenient in any given moment (as tech companies have instructed them, promising endless amounts of pleasure if they do), has been extinguished.

https://robhorning.substack.com/p/fragments-scraps-the-bits-and-greasy

In making this assumption, which he acknowledges might be correct, we are affirming there’s little possibility for responding to emerging technologies in organised and collective ways. There’s a degree of performativity at work here in the sense that affirming that we are already atomised contributes to that atomisation by perpetuating a social imaginary which is atomised. However in spite of the magical thinking which late-stage poststructuralism was sometimes prone to generating, simply pointing to that performativity doesn’t impact upon the reality the claim designates (fallibly or otherwise).

It confuses the discursive act with the sociopolitical reality in relation to which that action takes place. Those discursive acts certainly, in their totality, contribute to the constitution of that sociopolitical reality but (a) they do not determine it (b) their causal influence is about transformation or reproduction. The causality operates through the role social imaginaries play in conditions agency, rather than be something which operates in a quasi-autonomous way. There’s a degree of performativity but it’s not, so to speak, performative all the way down. Nor is it performative in the present tense.

Today, #political #lies are also #performativity . 🤔   Only, a type of performativity in which what you are performing is not what you are saying, but the accompanying subtext.  It would be nice if this was confined to traditional fascists, but it’s a style of politics which has spread to the new governing party in the UK amongst others.

I was fascinated to learn that J.L. Austin was a major figure in British intelligence during the second world war, with a particular focus on drawing out the operational implications of intelligence. I find it hard to read about this and not infer that his sensitivity for how to do things with words must have been shaped by managing the diffusion of this knowledge during the war:

But in 1942 he took over the direction, at G.H.Q. Home Forces, of a small section which had recently been formed, to do the preliminary intelligence work for an invasion of Western Europe; and this was the field in which he became an unrivalled authority. His section, whose earlier days had been rather haphazard, was soon operating with method, rapidity, and a clear purpose. Though his standards were exacting, those under his command were enlivened by the confident sense of solid work getting done, of real progress being made. Professor A.J. Beattie, who served with Austin at this time, records that ‘his superiors in rank very quickly learned that he was an outstanding authority on all branches of intelligence work, and they soon depended on his advice far more than would normally have been considered proper in any headquarters’.

In the following year Austin’s section was vastly enlarged and transferred, under the name of the Theatre Intelligence Section, to 21st Army Group. Of this larger affair Austin as a Major – and later, when S.H.A.E.F. was formed, a Lt.-Col. – was of course not formally in command; but by this time his knowledge was so voluminous, his expertise so great, and his judgement so highly valued, that in practice he continued in charge of all the work. Before D-Day he had accumulated a vast quantity of information on the coast defences of northern France, on the base areas, supplies, formations, and transport system behind them, and indeed on every aspect of the German defence forces and civilian administration in that ‘theatre’. Weekly, and later daily, reports were issued recording changes in the German dispositions; and a kind of guidebook was compiled for the use of the invading troops, in whose title – Invade Mecum – those who know Austin’s writings will recognize his style. It has been said of him that he directed this huge volume of work ‘without ever getting into serious difficulty of any kind’ and, more impressively, that ‘he more than anybody was responsible for the life-saving accuracy of the D-Day Intelligence’.

Thanks to Milan Sturmer for pointing out there’s a book about this, recently reviewed in the LRB by Thomas Nagel:

Austin died of cancer in 1960 at the age of 48. Though he published only a handful of substantial essays during his lifetime, there are also significant posthumous publications, and Austin’s philosophical ideas, the power of his personal influence and his central position in the philosophical developments of his time make him a natural subject for an intellectual biography. But M.W. Rowe’s book isn’t just an intellectual biography. He has discovered that Austin was one of the most important Allied military intelligence officers during the Second World War, overseeing the team that made the Normandy landings possible. More than a third of the book is taken up with Austin’s five years in the army, and with the achievements he never talked about, even to his wife.
