A.I.-Generated #ReadingList in #ChicagoSunTimes Recommends Nonexistent Books
A summer reading insert recommended made-up titles by real authors such as #IsabelAllende and #DeliaOwens. The Sun-Times and The #PhiladelphiaInquirer have apologized.

The #PhiladelphiaInquirer reports 4/24 on a Black veteran, Maurice Byrd, who shot a white man in self-defense. Mr Byrd had called 911 as the altercation escalated; neighbors had video of him trying to de-escalate the conflict; and when the police arrived at the scene after the shooting, Mr Byrd had his driver's license, military ID, and gun permit laid out waiting for them on the ground next to his weapon.
Prosecutor charged him with 1st degree murder. He was in jail for 10 months awaiting trial.
And now he is one of the about 1% of Black people who tell the court that their shooting of a white person was self-defense, to have shooting found to be justified.
After about 10 months in jail charged with a crime that there was ample evidence he didn't commit, held under charges that should never have been brought, Byrd was found not guilty. But he's lost his business. There's a GoFundMe on his behalf.

âThe Philadelphia Inquirerâ
Itâs owned by a nonprofit foundation, has excellent columnists & reports on national matters. It endorsed Harris.
Not a national paper, but an important paper in a large east coast metro area.
Iâm proud to say Iâm a subscriber.
Bravo to the #philadelphiainquirer. Trumpâs absurd proposals distract from his damaging actions | Editorial [from their Editorial Board]
Hullabaloo over Donald Trump's North American trade war feint and Gaza takeover drew attention away from the real dirty work: a purge of federal workers and Elon Musk's unchecked power.
Philly Inquirer speaks truth to power: "Donât expect any serious efforts from an unserious man. Weâve seen this show before. Get ready for another four years of chaos, corruption, and incompetence."

The #PhiladelphiaInquirer holds strong. âAfter a first term spent tarnishing the presidency, Trump takes office again with empty promises of a gilded age. For those who believe in honesty, truth, justice, the rule of law and caring for the least of our brothers, Trump's return is a dark day.â Gift article.
I'm not joining Bluesky at the moment, though a lot of my Bad Place follows are; I may never join. I'm getting the same news through other outlets (here on #Mastodon, newsletters and pods, the #PhiladelphiaInquirer, local outlets like NJ Spotlight News). I'll still find the same news and info, but the slower third-person flow is not so triggering.

U.S. readers pledged $2.16 million [to The Guardian's fundraising campaign]. (Thatâs an additional $1.5 million since Saturday night.) The campaign broke the Guardian U.S. record for fundraising twice; first setting a one-day record on Friday with $485,000 raised and then topping that on Saturday with an additional $619,000 raised."

Sarah Scire reports that publications endorsing Harris, including the Philadelphia Inquirer and The Guardian, are capitalizing on the controversy Jeff Bezos has caused by yanking a Washington Post endorsement of Harris. Other publications endorsing Harris are now racking up new subscribers.
