A ball of #crestedPartridge perching for the night at the #GrusonGewächshäuser, where they roam freely in some of the greenhouses. It almost made me jump and scream, when I was standing right next to it and heard some rustling in the greenery. I did NOT expect a chonky demon bird almost at eye level, just centimetres away. 😅

🌎 California Quail (Callipepla californica)

The California Quail is a plump, small to medium-sized bird recognizable by its distinctive, forward-curving tear-drop plume (black on males, smaller and brown on females) and a scaled belly pattern. Males boast a sharp black face bordered in white, and a gray-blue chest, whereas females are primarily brown and camouflaged. They are highly social, living in groups called coveys across the brushy habitats, chaparral, and open woodlands of the western US and Baja California. These birds primarily forage on the ground, consuming seeds and leaves. Around five to seven subspecies are recognised. Gemini 3 (Edited)

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

Fun fact: They are known for their characteristic "Chicago" call and their tendency to run rather than fly when threatened.

Two striking birds with predominantly dark, iridescent plumage and vibrant red feathers on their heads and around their eyes. Here we have King Quails... although wouldn't the female then be a Queen Quail? 🤔 They do have other names, like the Chinese Painted Quail or Blue-Breasted Quail (despite the fact that only the male has a blue breast). The female is bigger than the male, and they don't have the head plumes that many other quails sport. But they are gorgeous!

A fat little quorb of a female King Quail stands on the ground, facing left (how's that for a sentence?). She has a puffed-up egg shape, with soft brown and tan feathers in various shades, a short, sharply-pointed black beak, black eyes, and yellow toes. She's very small, but even so, she's substantially larger than the male.

Unlike California quails, she doesn't have a head plume.

🌎 California quail (Callipepla californica)

The California quail (Callipepla californica), also known as the California valley quail or Valley quail, is a plump, short-necked bird with a distinctive forward-curving crest. Males have a black face with white stripes, while females are more subdued in colour. They are commonly found in brushy areas, where they forage for seeds and insects in groups known as "coveys." These social birds are often seen scratching the ground, dusting themselves, or perching on shrubs. Seven subspecies are recognised.

Yesterday I saved ten quail hens from being culled next morning due to severe bumblefoot infection. Their owner was keeping them on a wired floor in really poor hygiene. He never treats treats injuries, simply culling them when they are no longer are able to stand.
Two of them are in a really bad shape. But they eat well & bumblefoot treatment seems to work #quails #petquail
