#recommenderSystems

I love it when recommender systems are so chronically off that it just confirms the coming automated dystopian future we have built will be 90% Brazil and 10% LOTF.

A screenshot of an email from ResearchGate that says, We found a free webinar that matches your interests. The body of the message says, A reliable CNS safety assessment method. CNS safety risks often go undetected in the GLP talk studies because animal models fail to predict human neurological effects. CNS-3D brain organoids are 7.4 times more accurate than animal models offering a more reliable CNS safety assessment.

It has to be said that I am not a neurological or biological scientist. I am in fact a technology in society, in urban and learning contexts academic. So in fact have absolutely nothing to do with this field of study.

Ever wondered why your perfectly optimized recommender system underperforms in the real world? ๐Ÿค” My latest blog post, 'Recommender System Evaluation (Part 3): Real-World Deployment - When Rubber Meets the Road,' uncovers the crucial disconnect between offline metrics like accuracy and diversity, and actual live performance.

It's not enough to have great algorithms in theory. We delve into the complexities of real-world deployment, exploring vital aspects like proper A/B testing, understanding business impact (CTR, conversion, retention), balancing short-term vs. long-term goals, and ensuring fairness and mitigating bias in recommendations. ๐Ÿ“ˆ

Discover how to bridge this gap with practical evaluation frameworks and build systems that truly deliver value. Read the full insights and code examples here: fanyangmeng.blog/recommender-s #RecommenderSystems

For the past couple of weeks I have turned off my home feed on youtube and am only using the subscriptions button which behaves like an RSS feed.

Without dopamine optimising suggestions I am saving so much time! Highly recommended :D

On top of banning all Recommender Systems on social media, we must change from being powerless users of Tech giant services into having democratic collective control of algorithms on all services we use!

Tech platform co-ops creating apps and services which users can democratically and collectively control ๐Ÿ™Œ

NEW STUDY OUT IN IC&S

Putting #FilterBubble Effects to the Test

In an experimental survey study with real #news #recommendersystems (#NRS), we find **limited** support for #polarization effects of #algorithms inducing "filter bubble" like information environments.

Data also show how balanced algorithms may promote #depolarization.

๐Ÿ“š A Tribute to Information Overload ๐Ÿ“š

Information overload isnโ€™t just a problemโ€”itโ€™s a phenomenon shaping everything from media to research. In my latest essay, I dive into how this constant flood of data continues to transform technology and content discovery.

Iโ€™d love to hear your thoughts on how you navigate the overload.

This week marks the end of my time at the Joint Research Centre. I'm grateful to have contributed to the European Centre for Algorithmic Transparency, data access for researchers under DSA Article 40, and studying social mediaโ€™s impact on adolescent mental health. Next, Iโ€™m taking a break before returning to Sapienza Universitร  di Roma as a postdoctoral fellow. Iโ€™ll be sharing more about my research in and soon. Stay tuned for updates!

Measuring Bias in Job #RecommenderSystems: Auditing the Algorithms d.repec.org/n?u=RePEc:nbr:nber
"โ€ฆrecommender systems show different jobs to identical male & female job seekers, though most of the jobs overlap
โ€ฆwomen are steered towards jobs that pay less, are in smaller firms, & require less experience, suggesting a lower rank in firmsโ€™ hierarchies
โ€ฆsteer men & women towards job ads that contain words that are stereotypical for their gender"

The next round of our Algorithmic Accountability Reporting Fellowship is just around the corner! ๐Ÿš€

Got questions? Join us for a Q&A session with Naiara Bellio from our Journalism team TODAY at 6 pm: algorithmwatch.org/en/apply-fe

In this round, we're diving deep into the political economy of AI, exploring crucial topics like #generativeAI and #recommenderSystems. Our aim? To unravel the AI value chain and its far-reaching impact on society, particularly on specific population groups.

We support the Hope & Courage Collective open letter!

We must ban recommender systems on social media, so that algorithms no longer amplify the far-right online.

We deserve to have control over what we see online!

#RecommenderSystems #Algorithms #FarRight

Turn off the online hate megaphone.

Open letter from over 200 groups to Prime Minister Kier Starmer, First Minister Michelle O'Neill, deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly & Taoiseach Simon HarrisCivil society groups across Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and across the world call on political leaders to act quickly to prevent further violence, protect communities at risk, and hold social media platforms to account for the harms they cause.

No matter who you are, where you come from or how you identify, we all deserve to walk down the street without fear, to be safe and to live a decent life. People across Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland take pride in building welcoming communities.

But far right actors, racists and certain politicians are spreading fear determined to create mayhem, intimidate and silence communities. They try to benefit by making us afraid of each other, scapegoat marginalised communities and try to turn us against each other.

Calls to racist violence were recorded across all social media platforms in the lead up to riots in Belfast and across England, as well as in Dublin last year. In tandem, violent rhetoric, threats, and attacks have escalated and people and communities targeted by hate and racism feel increasingly unsafe and afraid to speak out.

We know that people's real lives are affected by what plays out online. Right now social media and video platforms recommend hateful, false and violent content for people to see. The business model prioritises emotionally manipulative content through algorithms that drive sharing and engagement. This distorts what people believe to be true, man
