- Most #NIMBYs just want to #RentSeek and keep their #neighbourhood segregated, and #AffordableHousing removes #classist (and thus mostly #racist) #segregation!
And those that don't want #RentControl are the moneyed that have parked their wealth in #RealEstate and expect the #tennants to foot the bill for their "#investment"…
There doesn't seem to be a single story on this topic which allows reader comment. It's not getting much coverage at all, as far as I can see. So I just wrote to the author of the story on WGBH:
"Perhaps your story would be more informative if it included some idea of whether the Governor or any of her friends and family members own rental properties, or have financial interests which rent properties in Massachusetts. The same for state legislators and other highly-placed officials. It would also be very helpful to know much the Governor and legislators have received over the years from landlords, large and small - both individually, and from any landlord organizations.
I hope to see an update or follow-up piece with that information."
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey (D) has announced that she opposes a state referendum which would limit rent increases to no more than 5% per year.
This is a Democratic governor in one of the bluest, most liberal states in the nation. A state where housing costs have *soared*. Massachusetts is consistently one of the three most expensive states in the nation for housing, and has been for a long time.
And the political establishment opposes even as mild a rent control as the current referendum proposes. This after they quietly killed off a similar referendum last time.
This is a bit personal for me. My landlord has doubled my rent over the last 10 years. So tell me again, liberals, about fighting to reform the system and make it more representative of working-class people?
I could use a laugh.

@cultmtl Rent control treats the symptom, not the disease. The root problem is insufficient supply for the demand, and so the cure is to increase supply or to decrease demand. #RentControl disincentivises the supply of apartments, and thereby makes the problem worse in the long run.
It's really something to see people in the same breath talk about being anti-fascist while demanding that government take on more power to tell people how much they can pay for rent.
It's a real sign of lack of self-awareness.
Good luck to #OntarioRenters as the #DougFord administration:
- Strips "Security of Tenure" (the right to live in the same rented house as long as you're paying rent)
- Enables corporate landlords to evict tenants based on “market conditions, personal needs or business strategies" (yup, now "business strategy" will be an acceptable reason for a forced eviction or rent increase)
- Eliminates #RentControl / Rent Increase Caps (from 2026 onward)
This will result in:
- More homelessness
- More encampments
- More instability
- People dying on the streets
Speak with your friends and neighbours about this! It's only repeated casual conversations that people will hear about this and take actions!
There's a reason they released this plan on a Friday, so that it will get minimal media coverage while still 'informing' the public, hide the announcement in plain sight!
