@michel hmm that was always the problem with my knowledge - I write in many different programming languages (even so ancient like #assembler and #rexx), but still don’t now too much about modern html/css 😡😩 I didn’t know about such possibilities like magically make tags to buttons.

A while back I tackled the idea of converting my #budget #spreadsheet to a normal Program.. With reports, transaction processing, and lots of traditional #Banking features I decided to use #RetroComputing #Mainframe tools and languages like #REXX, #VSAM, #IBM S370 a la MVS Tk5, and now #COBOL has joined the project to replace some #x86 (or Z) #Golang preprocessing. Not just any COBOL, #MVT COBOL'68 which lacks MANY modern/OOP/String functionality as they're commonly known.. Hello PIC X OCCURS!
I've completed "Code Chronicle" - Day 25 - Advent of Code 2024. 50 stars in the bag.
Using REXX made some things difficult. But in some cases, it was probably actually easier to deal with than a typical { } style language.

I've completed "Ceres Search" - Day 4 - Advent of Code 2024
REXX compound variables - no need for bounds checking.
Day 2 done. Got stuck on part 2 a bit because I misspelled a variable name and didn't notice for a few iterations.
After messing with it on and off for a few years, I'm actually going to try to do the complete Advent of Code this year. Going to do it using O.G. REXX for an extra bit of fun. #AdventOfCode #REXX https://adventofcode.com/2024/day/1
Long shot, but does anyone have documentation how the IBM LEXX editor was extensible with REXX? (how extensions/macros were integrated)
@tomi About the same story here. Loved OS/2 Warp 4 back in the day. And I remember playing countless hours of Galactic Civilizations on it. REXX was also my first "serious" programming/scripting language I used after Basic. Nice memories. Still remember what a disappointment it was when father had to switch to Windows since he needed it for some application for work :( Only a couple of years latter GNU/Linux put fun back into computing again.
Recently I started to read a book about #ARexx, the #Amiga version of the #Rexx language.
I'm unable to understand why I underestimated this language for no reason because ARexx has very advanced features for the time.
One feature that impressed me are the compound variables, something like arrays, but much more evolved and in some ways they remind me #LUA tables.
If any #Amigans has ignored ARexx like me, I highly recommend taking a look at the docs that you can now find anywhere.

@mhd I have an ongoing project that I’ve been tinkering with on and off (mostly off) for well over 20 years (!), first on OS/2, then eComStation, currently on ArcaOS. Uses VisPro/REXX. Like all the best hobby projects, it will probably never see the light of day, but hey, it’s fun. 🙂

Following up on the Tcl and ooRexx release cycle: Tcl 8.6.15 was just released and they are making good progress on the Tcl/Tk 9.0.0 release candidate. There is talk about an ooRexx 5.1.0 release being readied. There are fewer active participants in ooRexx development so reviewing changes can take a while. The maybe obvious lesson here is that even if the release tools and processes are well maintained, you need to have an engaged community as well.

After recommending #Python instead of #Bash scripting to a colleague and the wonderful blog post https://blog.koehntopp.info/2021/01/05/using-python-to-bash.html by @isotopp, that sold me on the idea, I realized that back in the early 90s I used and loved #REXX for things that you would use Python or #JavaScript resp. #NodeJS today.
Funny how after years of being forced to use Windows, I completely forgot the idea of using a decent scripting language.
