Hey, Mac Numbers pros: Is there a way to keep a chart visible while scrolling through a long spreadsheet? I feel like this should be an easy thing, but my early morning brain cells can't figure it out. #apple #mac #numbers #spreadsheet

Ah, yes! The world was utterly lost without a 150-row #spreadsheet of #knife #steels 🤔🔪. Who knew so many people were crying into their soup about #edge #retention and corrosion resistance? Now you, too, can spend hours debating the merits of CPM-S30V versus VG-10 instead of actually cutting anything. 🍴🤷♂️

MorphOS developer Jacek 'jacadcaps' Piszczek announces his "CellBasics" program in the MorphZone.
The standard Excel syntax has already been implemented, but the common functions still need to be programmed.
CellBasics is an almost completely self-written program, only the formula parser and the routines for loading xlsx files would be ports of open source libraries.
Mind blown🤯 - turns out that #LibreOffice #Calc can natively read some (but not all!) variants of the ancient #Microsoft #Multiplan file format.
Multiplan was a #spreadsheet application from the early/mid '80s that preceded #Excel. More info on the format in this excellent 2023 post by @Thorsted:
https://preservation.tylerthorsted.com/2023/11/10/multiplan/
And Multiplan is still available here:
Tomorrow, join us at Aberdeen Python User group as we look at Grist, a "modern, open source spreadsheet that goes beyond the grid".
The presenter Robert McWilliam will take a deep dive into its features. Then we will then have some challenges to try from simply using Grist like a normal spreadsheet through to using some of the more advanced features.

🤣 Oh joy, someone finally figured out how to run #Linux inside Excel—because what could possibly be more efficient than shoving an entire operating system into a spreadsheet! 🤦♂️ Meanwhile, GitHub continues its quest to redefine "productivity" by cramming #AI into everything except common sense. 📈

Total sidenote, just for #auspol nerds, here's the #spreadsheet fun I've had …
I nerdswiped myself because of my old faithful tactic being unavailable — I'll reveal it even if not valuable to most people — I used to take the Family First HTV and say thank you, because they were very useful — and then turn their HTV upside down. A handy alignment of 180° interests, in the 2010s for me. But they don't run everywhere anymore.
But once you go past the 2PP candidates, it doesn't matter of course
I wanted to reference some information from a #spreadsheet today, but #LibreOffice decided it had an update to apply. It took forever! I was so frustrated it had be considering going back to #Microsoft Office. I have to admit too, the suite is groggy and slow at times. Calc is my most used app and it just takes forever to open. Excel is the opposite especially when opening large spreadsheets.
Ah, yes, the #spreadsheet that promises to revolutionize your life with its magical #Python #integration, because who doesn't want to edit millions of rows just for fun?! 🤡 Finally, a solution for the 0.0001% of users who need #unlimited worksheets—because obviously, everyone’s been pining for that. 🧙♂️✨

I need to set up a private spreadsheet that is viewable and editable by an elderly relation (who uses spreadsheets all the time) and a couple of younger family members, one of whom lives interstate.
The obvious answer is Google Sheets. Is there an alternative that is usable for these people?

If you have a spreadsheet formula too long for your brain to fully understand at once, you can use tools to indent and decompose the formula to ease its reading! 😍 > https://www.formulaboost.com/parse #TIL #spreadsheet #excel #sheets #openoffice #LibreOffice #libreoffice_calc
Just discovered a neat little feature of GitLab. If you copy cells from a spreadsheet app like LibreOffice Calc and paste it in a comment there, it turns into a nicely formatted Markdown table.
Does not work as well with other forge software I know of. GitHub does not format the table and adds some weird HTML, and Forgejo just pastes it as an image.

Just a qick reminder that we've published another blog article about in which cases #NumeRe is the better #spreadsheet app:

Spreadsheets are like dynamically-typed programming languages - they are low-friction, but not robust. Relational databases are kinda opposite. Tools like @grist keep the robustness while reducing the friction.
I've been trying out Grist for a few days and I like it a lot - both the concept and the execution.
