Monday morning #sculling on the Wear in light rain. Mostly technical and exercises on a very warm but quite damp morning. The water was just over the landing but heavy rain upstream is bringing more for later this morning.

Later than normal erg session as I've a day off. The water level is just about rowable but there was still quite a stream on. 30mins steady and some 500m pieces to break it up all accompanied by The Cardiacs On Land and In the Sea.

Despite my kid waking me up 3x last night from growing pains, I managed to do 185 w avg in a 10 min stretch at 23 s/m, which is close to the best I can do for 10 min straight. Not sure where the energy came from. #rowing

Friday #sculling on the Wear in Bluewater. A cool dry morning. I forgot my phone so posting later than planned. Recovery row as the lurgy is back. Great start to the weekend although sadly followed by work. The last working Friday before Christmas. Next week I'm off to Sheffield Monday and Tuesday, only two working days!

The #rowing team did heavy lifts this morning m, afte half an hour on the ergs. I matched my deadlift 1 rep max from last winter & was only 10 lbs behind my squat 1 rep max. Feels pretty good, though tired muscles are very tired now.

Rutherford head 2025 and the forecast was wet and cold, combined with the march across Tyne mud this is the event of the year in the north east.
The start was delayed and the wait was bitterly cold but we a great row despite the promised rain arriving at about the 3km point. It arrived as slush and absolutely soaked me through in about 30 seconds.
We were about 1:45 ahead of the nearest boat in our competition on raw time. Enough for a win and a great end to the rowing year. I should be warm again by Christmas.

60 minutes on the erg this evening at rate 18-20, keeping my heart rate between 120-130. Type 2 fun, I would say… but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Apparently this is how I spend my Friday evening now.

5k time trial on the erg this evening at s/r 20. 40 seconds quicker than yesterday, tough but paced reasonably well. My hr touched 170 though, which tells me I’m not quite over this cold just yet.
Monday #sculling on the Wear, a little later than normal but we didn't miss the rain. Soaked in a boat with 4" of rainwater and not a dry garment on my body. The romance of early morning rowing meets the reality of the British climate.

I don't do formal dinners due to an intense and immature dislike of dressing up so wasn't there in person to see our crew nominated and winning crew of the year at last night's oarsmen's dinner. Some recognition for early mornings, volunteering and getting repeatedly beaten by a composite crew. Yes it's a participation trophy but this year it's our participation trophy 😊
