Book 38: “Trail of Lightning” by #RebeccaRoanhorse.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. #RuralFantasy (new genre for me) that follows a Navajo monster hunter as she deals with deities and witches with a hot medicine man on the rez. There’s a second book already out that I can’t wait to read.

Autumn has been travelling around the country & the continent to Ren Faires, craft shows, and the like for years. She's also been finding knots in the Strands that connect all beings and helping them untangle them. Solving Problems. Helping out.

When a craft festival is rained out, she takes shelter in a library. There, she meets a librarian who not only knows the Strands - but has been recording information about them for decades.

His voice was a rumble and a laugh all at once. It was joyous and it was dangerous and it was smokey, and this bar being what it was and why it was, five people were nearly to the bar before someone stopped them.

The storm was a bad one, the sort that tore down barns and left trees falling on houses, the sort that was meant to remind humans that Mother Nature still ruled. But Mother Nature and the Family had a long agreement, and this, this was the Family's land. They paid her enough in protection to be able to say 'not here. Not where our blood runs as deep as the ground water.' And they paid the price for that, too. Beryl had at least three bruises growing from the flying debris and she had skinned a knee and both hands when she fell. That was okay. Her mother would tut in the morning, but right now, it was still night, and she was standing against the storm with her Aunts.

The air on the balcony was crisp and chill. If Shereen closed her eyes, she could imagine that she was standing in the meadow to the south of the family homestead. The noises were wrong, of course - the taxis never stopped honking. The doors never stopped slamming. The smell wasn't quite right, either, rubber and smoke. But the moon was there. The air was there. Anywhere she went, the moon would be there.

Eseme asked: Much of their magic seems to be craft based, and involves implying magic in items. Does this only work on handmade objects?

I imagine if you were sitting at a mechanical knitting loom or fabric loom and putting all of your magic and will into it, you could probably imbue magic into its creation as well, but I think that's not as easy-

A witch lived in the house on the corner and, to hear people talk about it, a witch had lived there as long as there'd been a house there, maybe longer.

Sometimes they'd whisper that she'd cursed someone or made them disappear; sometimes that she'd blessed the crops or healed an illness.

Beryl wasn't bothered either way: the witch was her aunt, and she was pretty sure her aunt knew what she was doing.

"Eva Novel," also known as The Family Power.

Set in my Aunt Family universe and timeline:

Eva's Aunt Asta was a maiden aunt, the holder of the power of the family, both magical and secular. Now that she's died, that title, the house, and, presumably, the family power are passed down to Eva.
