Aha. // The "Garden of Power", one of the themed gardens in Elbauenpark #Magdeburg. Surprisingly, it doesn't symbolize the simple-minded "German Michel" (a personification of the German people), putting a headless leader on a pedestal. Instead, it represents Magdeburg's historical significance as the "Third Rome" (a nod to Holy Roman Emperor Otto the Great, who made Magdeburg one of his most powerful courts), and the conflict between secular and clerical authority. Mmhmm, if you say so.

A low-angle shot of a sculpture from the "Garden of Power" in Elbauenpark, Magdeburg, Germany. In the foreground, the back of a small, human-like stone statue is out of focus. Behind it, seven tall, weathered concrete pillars of varying heights stand in a cluster. The tops of the pillars are rough and jagged, with a small, headless human-like stone statue perched on the tallest one on the far left. A contrail from an unseen jet stretches across the clear blue sky above, and two zip lines run diagonally across the frame. In the background, there are trees and other sculptures, out of focus.A medium-wide shot of the "Garden of Power" sculpture in Elbauenpark, Magdeburg. In the foreground, several small, squat, human-like stone statues are arranged on large, flat concrete slabs that are tilted at various angles. In the middle ground, several tall, weathered concrete pillars stand in a cluster on a raised platform, with one of the human-like statues, but without a head, perched on the tallest pillar. The statues and pillars are surrounded by bright green grass dotted with dandelions. In the distance, a church spire is visible on the left, and a row of tall trees lines the background on the right. The sky is a clear, bright blue with a faint contrail.A slightly high-angle shot of a sculpture in a park. In the foreground, several long, flat concrete slabs are laid out on a grassy lawn in a cross-like shape. A cluster of small, human-like stone statues sits on the grass at the centre of the cross. A conical, stone spire rises from the ground behind them. The grass around the sculpture is green with patches of dandelions and small white flowers. In the background, there are manicured hedges, a tree with purple blossoms, and parts of a modern building, the Millennium Tower, on the left. The scene is lit by bright sunlight.A close-up, low-angle shot of one of the small, stone statues from the "Garden of Power" in Magdeburg. The statue is a caricature of a man, with a large, lumpy head, prominent features, and a stern expression. He is wearing a shirt, tie, and trousers. The statue is positioned on a patch of bright green grass speckled with dandelions. In the soft-focus background, a large, conical building, the Millennium Tower, with horizontal white rings is visible, along with another conical spire, a hedge, and a tree with purple blossoms. The scene is brightly lit by the afternoon sun.

Once this huge bronze head of Lenin sat atop the KGB building in the town of Preiļi in Latvia. Sculpted by Dzintra Jansone, it is monumental in scale. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, it was removed and eventually went on sale by Sotheby auction house at a sculpture sale at Chatsworh. Who profited? And how the dealer managed to acquire it remains a mystery! The sale price was approximately twenty thousand pounds. It ended up in a sculpture garden of a man who was a former deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and the man whose leadership challenge brought down Margaret Thatcher - Baron Heseltine of Thetford also known as Michael Heseltine. Now it sits in its own room , surrounded by beech hedges and yew hedges in the rolling green soft landscape of Northamptonshire in England, The irony.

We spent the past two months redoing our sculpture garden. We opened it 14 years ago, and it needed a little care, mostly to the plant life. The new plants are native varieties for the most part, and the garden has been redesigned to create separate spaces for art and events. Learn more:

Three workers from Ruppert planting a native variety of liriope in the Georgia Museum of Art's Jane and Harry Willson Sculpture Garden. They're all down on the ground, wearing green shirts, dark pants and bright yellow caution vests, as they gently place each plant into neatly ordered rows in the dirt.
One of my favourite sculptures, carved from wood, this is in a sculpture garden in my home town, I visit every time I’m there 🫶

Spoonbridge and Cherry is a sculptural fountain designed by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. It was funded by a $500,000 donation from art collector Frederick R. Weisman and is permanently located in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. The piece was completed and installed in 1988 for the Sculpture Garden's opening and consists of a large cherry resting atop a large spoon partially straddling a small pond.

The hare caught my attention because just last year (July 2022) I saw another of Flanagan's Leaping Hares in the #Minneapolis #sculpturegarden.

Adding these to the #LOVEsculpture (by Robert Indiana) to track during my travels!
