Trump wants to kill most Section 8 rental assistance and replace it with “state-run” programs—over $26 billion in support gone for millions of poor Americans. Proposed two-year cap for “able-bodied adults” means even working people will be homeless. #HUD #Section8 npr.org/2025/05/02/nx-s1-53740

This person is stupid AF.

If you have seen this please understand this person has no idea what they are talking about.

Sure her sibling’s landlord probably did decide they don’t want to accept section 8 anymore. That’s been happening around here for a while. In New Hampshire it is happening when whoever owns the apartment complex sells it to some corporation that cranks up the rent so high it doesn’t qualify for section 8 anymore. OR the place gets so run down it won’t pass inspection anymore, but even then when I’ve seen that happen they just move people around as they renovate.

The Housing choice voucher that someone else told her to tell her sibling to ask for is section 8. It’s the same program.

Then in the replies she says she knows someone who’s been staying in a friend’s basement for two years waiting for a section eight apartment where she can use her voucher, that’s not how this works. I wish it was how this works. It’s much worse than that.

When you get a section 8 voucher you only have something like two months to sign a one year lease and if you don’t you lose the voucher. They don’t let you hold onto it for two years looking for a place, that woman doesn’t have a voucher anymore. She probably applied to a complex that has its own subsidy. Those waitlists are long because if you get approved for assistance at that complex you can only use it at that complex, but if you have the bandwidth and the application fees you can apply to 10 of these and be on 10 waitlist at once.

And yeah, those take years because once someone moves in they can’t easily move somewhere else because the rental assistance only applies to that property so they would have to get on a waitlist at another property in order to move.

I think OP is getting really confused about the difference between public housing, subsidized apartment complexes with their own subsidy, and section 8/Housing choice voucher. Those are three different rental assistance programs.

I’m not saying that bad things aren’t going to happen to those of us who get rental assistance, I’m just saying that this person went to Reddit with all the confidence in the world claiming that millions of people are getting tossed out of their apartments because Elon is ending section 8, and that’s not what is happening to her relative at all.

#Project2025’s #RussVought, #Trump’s director of the Office of Management & Budget [#OMB], previously endorsed an end to the federal #voucher program. He [falsely] wrote in 2022 that the #Section8 program in particular “brings with it crime, decreased property values, & results in dependency & subsidized irresponsibility.”

…the expected overhaul would most likely amount to more than just a technical change, resulting in fewer federal dollars for #LowIncome #families on top of additional cuts planned for the rest of the Dept of #Housing & Urban Development [#HUD]. On Thurs, the #Trump admin took the first steps toward potentially selling the agency’s HQ in Washington.

Admin ofcls recently discussed cutting or canceling out the #vouchers & other #RentalAssistance programs & potentially replacing them with a more *limited* system of #housing grants, perhaps sent to states, acc/to 3 people familiar with the matter…. The overhaul would be included in #Trump’s new #budget, which is expected to be sent to #Congress in the coming weeks.

The potential changes primarily concern federal #housing #vouchers, including those more commonly known as #Section8. The aid generally helps the poorest tenants cover the monthly costs of apartments, town homes & single-family residences.

Maine #housingauthorities can’t access funds after Donald #Trump freezes #grants
#Section8
The memo announcing the freeze from Trump’s acting director of the Office of Management and Budget said it would be effective at 5 p.m. Tuesday, but the executive directors of both Portland and Bangor’s housing authorities said they were already unable to access federal funds by early Tuesday afternoon. The director of #MaineHousing, the state housing authority, said that all public #housingauthorities in Maine were facing the same issue.

I was briefly excited about receiving this letter because recertification is a lot of work for me, mainly because I submit all my medical expenses because there are so many.

But I don’t think this is actually good for people like me. Maybe I’m misunderstanding this but it just asks us to report changes to family composition income and assets but not medical expenses. So if mine spike up next year I’m stuck at the 2024 level until 2027?

I don’t know, maybe this is good and I should be happy about it. I guess I’ll wait and see.

Part of a letter dated January 10, 2025 addressed to section 8 voucher participants telling me that now my recertification is only three years because I’m elderly or disabled I have no children and I have a fixed income.
Of course we are still required to report changes to family composition income and assets within 10 days .

@grrlscientist I’m pretty sure the woman who wrote this guide is here somewhere but I found this on Reddit this morning and it looks like a amazing resource for finding subsidized housing and getting on section 8 waitlist even if the one in your area is closed.

I assume the section 8 waitlist for the Boston area is closed because it’s too long, but if you can find one in Massachusetts that’s open you don’t actually have to live in Massachusetts to apply for section 8 in Massachusetts. Or at least you didn’t have to a decade ago.

But look at these income limits. Back when I had a career my mom used to tell me I should get on the section 8 waitlist just in case and I would scoff at her and tell her that I never qualify for anything, I’m pretty sure I would have qualified even when I had my career and when I became disabled I regretted not taking her advice because it was a really long wait.

The updated Boston Housing Authority income limits for public housing and section 8.

For public housing for one person for example, the income limit for low income housing is $91,200, very low would be $57,100. The state limit is $82,950.

The section 8 limits are the same except there’s an “extremely low” category which is $34,300. (I think that’s the one where section 8 pays all but 30% of your income, the others give different discounts.)

The chart lists the limits up to an eight person household.

what the fuck does is mean that "Section 8 is closed?"

look, I know I'm never going to get Section 8 because I'll either be dead or have solved my housing problems by the time it becomes relevant, but I'm just curious because the Housing Authority worker I just spoke to wasn't able to explain it.

This is one of my favorite sea stories.

There was this sailor who walked around on the deck of a ship, picking up any piece of paper he found and looking at it seriously for a moment. He would then toss it, saying barely audibly, “That’s not it.”

He was counseled about it by his Chief, and when the Chief handed him the paperwork to sign for the counseling, he looked at the paper a moment and said, “that’s not it.” and threw it to the deck.

Flustered, the Chief sent the sailor to the sick bay to see the Doc, and the Doc checks him out. He pulls out the Rorscharch test cards to see what the young sailor had to say he saw, and every card just caused the young sailor to shake his head and say, “That’s not it.”

The Doc talked to the Captain, and the Captain decided to have him go to see Psych when they got back to shore, confining the sailor to quarters for the interim. Months later, the same thing played out on shore at Psych. “That’s not it.”, over and over again.

Finally the Navy decided to discharge him, so he went to the Personnel Department where they had his discharge papers. The Yeoman pushed them across the desk, telling the sailor to read and sign.

The sailor diligently read the pages, nodded, and said, “That’s it!”.

He whipped out a pen and signed the paperwork.

He was stoic, and held out for what he wanted – and got it.
