Would you have your own name engraved on a gift you had made for someone else?

In 1713, when Queen Anne appointed Robert Benson, or 1st Baron Bingley, as ambassador to the Spanish court, he was sent with what are now known as the Bingley cups. Leading London goldsmith Phillip Rollos the Younger made these enormous cups, each with a cover and salver, to be displayed as status symbols when Bingley hosted officials and diplomats. The cups showed the wealth and skill of Britain.

To get a sense of the maker's skill, have a look at the description of the photo (in its ALT text).

Each cup is finely engraved, on the side, with Queen Anne's perfectly lettered monogram, AR—appropriate since Bingley was representing Anne.

Museums often hold such objects on behalf of the UK government, which accepts them as payment of inheritance tax bills. In this way, some of the crown's past wealth returns to the nation.

Object description from Victoria and Albert museum's catalogue: "A silver-gilt cup, cover, and matching salver, one of a pair, the cup on a spreading circular foot cast and chased with basketwork, the body applied with masks, lambrequins and strapwork above and below the central moulded rib, the scroll handles cast with beading and foliage, the stepped spool-shaped covers with foliage and gadrooned borders, a band of guilloche enclosing rosettes and vase-shaped finial, the salver on a bell-shaped foot with basket work border and partly fluted knop and with gadrooned rim and shaped leaf and scroll border, the cup and salver engraved with the Royal coat of arms, the cover with the monogram of Queen Anne, the cup, cover and salver each struck four times with the maker's mark, the salver and cup both marked with scratch weights."

The monogram consists of the letters AR, for Anne Regina, partly in Latin, meaning Queen Anne.

These cups with covers and salvers are large: almost ½ meter, or 20 inches tall. Together, the pair of Bingley cups weigh 15 kilos, or 33 pounds.

Forgot I made this. Harkens back to my silversmithing days. Went well with the cranberry coloured dress I wore for Thanksgiving. #silver #maker #silversmith #argentium #garnet

If you look closely at this one you can see the water in the bucket still boiling from the temperature of the invested flask. We pour our silver at close to 1850*F and while it cools considerably before we quench it there's still a whole lot of heat.

A spiderweb at the intersection of a steel ceiling and white wall was previously invisible to us until the soot from our kiln dusted it black making the delicate structure easy to see.

Ever wondered what a typical silver casting session looks like? Here's a peek behind the scenes of us removing our sterling silver designs from their plaster mold. We do this in an ordinary bucket, nothing fancy. When the metal is around 800 °F/ 427 °C we dunk it in the water. The high temp causes the surrounding water to boil and this turbulence helps break away the plaster from the silver.

We are approaching the 10 year anniversary of Xover0 Jewelry Studio! 🎉 So we'll be sharing some throw back pics to reflect on the last 10 years.

Over the past decade, we've worked our asses off. Not only designing and creating original jewelry with our own two hands, but also building the studio space itself.

This is what our studio looked like in the final phase of construction as we were preparing to paint.

Not for Vancouver silversmiths. Only a couple on the island but finding someone closer to them on the mainland is a better choice. #VancouverBC #YVR #Silversmith

"Jane Short studied jewelry at London’s Central School of Art and Design and was introduced to enameling by her instructor Patrick Furse (1918–2005) during her second year of coursework. Short recalls “liking the rich quality of the color and the way the light reflected through it. I fell in love with the technique.” Upon graduation, she studied silversmithing under Gerald Benney (1930–2008) and was encouraged by his introduction of color in his silver a few years earlier. Short’s early work reflects her use of cloisonné, in which the enamels are applied within compartments formed by affixed wires or strips of silver. Her current work frequently employs champlevé (enamel in carved or etched cells) and basse-taille (enamel in an engraved or chased low-relief pattern) to produce painterly images that are modeled on her watercolor designs. The stunning decoration of Malcolm Appleby’s Oil Slick tumbler resulted from the designer’s request for Short to enamel this challenging surface. Special thanks to The Pearson Silver Collection. In today’s #mail: a #SterlingSilver #ClanYoung badge made by #Inverness #Silversmith #JohnFraser.

It arrived very tarnished & the eBay photo of the badge made it look even worse.

I managed to score it for less $50 Aussie, which is a little under a third of what these provincial Scottish silversmith badges sell for.

The motto of "Robore Prudentia Praestat", translates to "Prudence excels strength”.

The badge arrived very tarnishedAfter less than a minute wiping it with a silver cloth the badge started to brighten & show the silver under all the muck.

"Ndidi Ekubia is a graduate of London’s Royal College of Art. She employs traditional silversmithing techniques to push sheet silver to its working limits in her Manchester studio. Of Nigerian descent, Ekubia cites inspiration from her African heritage to create flowing, sculptural, and highly expressive forms that range from small, domestic items to stunning centerpieces. The form of Ekubia’s Flamingo vase, hand-raised from a single sheet, appears liquid, as if the silver is flowing upward from the eye of a cyclone. Examples of Ekubia’s silver are held in such prestigious collections as the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford.
