In my latest piece for The New Daily I explore how much each industry will be impacted by the tightening skills shortage. This is obviously a complex thing to forecast but I think I found a decent proxy. We can look at the economic value that each industry produces and divide that by the number of workers in the industry. The top half of this chart is arguably occupied by sectors that have more wiggle room to attract staff by offering higher wages. Just have a look at how much mining stands out - mining will never want for workers as wages can be adjusted. I am particularly nervous to see health, education, and construction in the bottom half of the chart. The skills shortage is already holding these sectors back significantly.

#Demographics of #Australia in the coming decade. The #Millennials make #babies, the #babyboomers retire, and #GenZ enters the world of #work in favourable times of low #unemployment and a #skillsshortage. The #future looks bright for #youngworkers. These #statistics suggest #optimism isn’t misplaced.

This is me trying to send a bit of hope and optimism to our young workers. More videos like this on my #TikTok: tiktok.com/@simongerman600?_t=

Buckle up. In The Australian I am foolish enough to predict housing policy. States grab power from local governments, holiday homes will be taxed like crazy, migration will be reformed, finally first home buyer grants (and alike) will be cancelled. These and many more policies that I likely to be implemented are listed here. The old property mantra of location, location, location will be replaced by supply, supply, supply.

The skill shortage is here to stay as it is baked into the demographic pie 🥧. The big Baby Boomer cohort is retiring in the coming decade and they leave a big gap in the workforce that the small Gen Z cohort can’t fill (even with the help of migration). In this column I’m showing which jobs are losing most workers as they approach the retirement cliff like lemmings (farmers and drivers). There is a big searchable table that you can use to analyse the situation for your occupation.

I described in the past that the skills shortage will persist for an uncomfortably long time. The shortage is essentially universal but in some professions the shortage worries me more than in others. The fact that we are running out of teachers is terrible and has terrible downstream consequences in our knowledge economy.
