So Daily Maverick resolutely refuses to put its content behind a paywall. Instead, they switched to a voluntary donation model, where your donation buys extra perks like invitations to webinars, discounts on books, and stuff like that.
They also closed their comment section to subscribers only, in an effort to filter out the obvious trolls.
It only sort-of worked. The only trolls now are the paid ones, the unsubtle obvious ones whose remarks could easily just be copy&pasted in from a pre-written list for all the relevance they have to the actual article.
So my proposal is this: Increase the minimum subscription by a lot. Comments don't really add much of anything beyond SEO traffic (curated Letters To The Editor are far more meaningful), so keep pricing them higher until the trolls are paying the bills!
