💁🏻‍♀️ ICYMI: 🐛🛡️ Dr. Adrian Smith captures #NorthCarolina #caterpillars in #macro detail as they defend themselves, prepare for transformation, and eat their way toward metamorphosis. These #larvae convert plant matter into protein that feeds #birds, #wasps, and other creatures up the food chain – but their diverse defense strategies help some survive to become #butterflies and #moths.

The #rosechafer #Cetonia #aurata (#Scarabaeidae) is distributed from Europe to Asia. The #saprophagous #larvae develop over about two years in Central Europe in #soil substrates often under #deadwood. According to R. Beaven et al. (2025), #rectalcomplexes as in C. autata (larvae only) are recycling systems of the #gutcontents and #evolved #independently within Scarabaeideae.

4 midge galls on the underside of leaves, built under the central vein. Long, fat, sausage-like packages, the ones in back green, the one in front a bluish red. On a white countertop. And with the red gall cut open, several little caterpillar-like larvae crawled out. They are bright orange, with one rounded end, the other end coming to a point with a black dot on it. There are two larvae still on the ruptured gall, two in front on the countertop. Subfamily Cecidomyiidae, they say on BugGuide.

Better together: sibling cooperation matters! Burying beetle larvae consistently benefited from growing up with siblings — both with and without parents. This study by Huber et al. shows that sibling interactions can play a key role in the evolution of family life. Read now ahead of print!

What you can see here is a seed in the palm of a hand. The half-translucent worm crawling on it is the larva of a fungus gnat. The seed has been hollowed out by these little insects. That's catastrophic if you try to grow food and it gets eaten before it could even sprout.

A brown seed, covered in dirt in the palm of a hand. The photo has a high magnification, so that a small larva is visible, crawling on top of the seed.
