I can read this in 2 ways. One I agree with, and the other I'm putting to the challenge.
Under Mindfulness core principle of Social experience design there exists no "winning", only Progress matters. Although #SX only considers #FOSS as the software, an SX artifact. Software doesn't win either, it fulfills needs (or it should).
Other interpretation, that FOSS projects cannot be self-sustainable in most cases. Well, here #SOSS comes around. Coding is social.

The (emergent) strategy of the #FOSS movement as a whole is "Make FOSS, change the world". And it worked. 9 trillion of value to the corporate business world and big tech. You can do a lot with that money, and indeed change the world.
I would like to propose SOSS: Sponsored Open Source Software.
If your company uses OSS, you sponsor the project $100/year.
Not per seat, or per team, just $100/year, all in.
- 30 developers using Ghostty? $100
- 300,000 engineers using tmux? $100, total
You audit the OSS you use (OSS tools for this would quickly emerge, $100, thank you). You set up a bunch of annual $100 sponsorships. Everyone wins.
This guarantees the longevity of that tiny piece of code propping up your bank.
@gert exactly. That challenge is among the ones I'm exploring at Social coding commons. I defined the notion of #SOSS initiatives, who may deliver #FOSS artifacts i.e. the software itself. Separating the movement from its produce, and then focus on the sustainability of said movement.
What is "working in commons"?
Right now when saying "I work in the commons" the person standing next to you with the Google T-shirt nods approvingly, while carrying your created wealth. 😄
Given a "united commons" and "participative software development".
What is a Project?
An example. You start "Hello world" project, simplest possible. And then - because its a typescript project - you do npm install.
Now what is your Project?
From #FOSS perspective nothing much changed. It compiles and runs.
From #SOSS perspective you've just interwoven your project deep into a huge grassroots chaotic commons, and are exposed to the #sustainability risks of that decision.

1. Er det egentlig noe kult ha noe dyrt?
2. Gitt høy klæbbfaktor på ungdomsskoleelever og det at de har tendens til å vokse svært fort gjør at det direkte sløsing å bruke større summer på merkevareklær i aldersgruppen
3. Ungdommene er svært opptatt av å ha dyrest mulig klær, altså soss, går rundt med et sekkemerke som heter «douchebag»?

"Given too few eyes, all software contains bugs" a more realistic corollary to the traditional aphorism about open source from Aeva Black today at #SOSS
There are many people (haven't actually surveyed the percentage) that will happily pay for software, but hate paying their way into the prison of surveillance software. These are #soss people that will pay for "secure open source software." The only security is in open source. The only continuity is sustainable economics -- whether commons, foundations, or others.
