Wreck with $35b of treasure ‘confirmed’ as Spanish galleon, says researchers.

The rich treasures of the Spanish galleon San Jose appeared to have been gone forever after it was sunk by the Royal Navy in 1708.

The view from the main deck across the Menai Strait where the ship was docked. The kitchen and mess, not quite the same as it would have been. More modern equipment and features, as this ship is sailed all around the world and needs to function properly for a modern crew. The small workshop and map room, here they would work out their position using a variety of available navigational tools in the 16th and 17th centuries. The cargo hold, as it might have appeared, stacked as tightly as possible. A ship this size would have been in the region of 45 meters long and could carry around 500-600 tons of goods. The later ships towards the end of the 17th century were up to 70-80 meters long and had a capacity of up to 1200 tons of cargo.

An officers room, it's very cramped with a tiny bed. Perhaps 3sq/m in total with it's own lockable door. This is actually quite luxurious compared to regular seamen, who had a hammock and a small locker, and at most 1.5sq/m of space to live in.It's Davey Jones.... in a locker.... arf arf....A table hung from the ceiling is how they used to eat their meals, it moves with the motion of the ship and helps avoids spillages. The crew deck, was also the gun deck and they would often sleep in hammocks strung up above the guns, or amongst the cargo in the lower deck.

The day out was lovely, it's a strange feeling doing touristy things on your own doorstep.

We went to meet up with my sister and brother in law, and take a look around a replica Spanish Galleon.

Loads of pics, so I'll post replies to this with more.

Walked down the harbour into the walled city of Caenarfon and had some lunch at a nice place (been there before), and were serenaded by some buskers sitting just in front of us singing a load of 60's classics.

A Spanish Galleon at the dock side, looking from the rear 3/4 view. 3 tall masts and another angled one at the front with sails tied up.

The dock is obscuring it from the main deck down.A view from the front 3/4 angleA view from closer to the ship, looking across the 3 masts towards the bow of the ship, with all of the rigging on display.A view from a platform next to the ship, looking at the stern corner, a flag pole with the Spanish flag flying and a large lantern on an ornate post.

Sailing Back in Time: The Galeón Andalucía Visits Ireland

The sun had set by the time I got into the city to photograph the Andalucía. Twenty minutes earlier, the sun was shining on it and made for a spectacular photo.

I made a bracketed shot from further down the quay because there were bright lights on the front of the boat that would make a shot from that side difficult. I like this shot anyway, as it captures the old with the new. The buildings at the quayside are old, the ship is a replica of an old ship and other buildings nearby are new and modern.

I did take some more photos. A rather drunk man asked me to take a photo of him with the ship, using his phone. A few minutes later, he asked me to photograph him in front of Penrose House here and then went off home.

So, I discovered that the Galeón Andalucía is not just a static museum piece. It is the only replica of a 16th-17th century Spanish galleon in the world that actively sails today, having travelled over 80,000 miles and visited ports on four continents since its launch in 2009.

A full-scale replica of a 16th–17th century Spanish galleon, the Galeón Andalucía, docked at dusk along the quay in Cork, Ireland, with its tall masts, intricate rigging, and wooden hull reflected in the calm river water; city buildings and soft evening lights form the backdrop.

The Galeón Andalucía in Cork

The Galeón Andalucía, a replica of a 16th-17th century Spanish galleon docked in Cork a few days ago for the European Maritime Days to Play, on yesterday and today.

I wandered down the quays where there were a number of other boats. A nice day out for school kids who got a few hours out of the classroom too!

A wide-angle photo taken at ground level in Cork, Ireland, showing a large replica of a historic wooden sailing ship docked at a harbour festival. The ship features three tall masts with rigging and furled sails, a Spanish flag at the stern, and several people gathered under a white tent near the gangway. The foreground is cobbled stone pavement with grass growing between the stones. Signs read "HARBOUR FESTIVAL."
