When I implemented the fan, I had a cool physics bug that flung the cat up into the air.

After reading a ton of “Don't try this at home”, “Hire a professional”, “This is extremely dangerous” warnings all over the site I was buying parts from, I was able to replace the extension springs on two garage doors. In under an hour. And I had never done this before.. And no flying springs!

Seriously, how the hell could you hurt yourself doing this? The hardest part of the whole thing was lifting the first garage door (160 lbs) that I had disconnected the springs on to weigh .. The one I hadn't disconnected the springs on went even faster because I didn't have to go crazy trying to lift it.

Pop off old spring, pop on new spring. Ensure cables are in the pulley slots. And... done. Do this four times and poof, springs changed.

Doors open properly now, and the shiny new garage door openers are much happier.

All of a sudden we hear a metallic "#sproing!" noise and the door has popped open, and Zena is climbing out of the door. She had somehow managed to figure out how to un-latch the new latch mechanism, and then open the door the old way.

I had to make a more complex latch after that, that couldn't be opened from within hamster-arm's-reach of the cage.
