I've been using #1Password for over 12 years. The new version is giving me nothing but troubles, slow to unlock, etc. and they just announced quite a significant price increase to their subscription model.
I have until August to decide, but I'm considering #Strongbox with a lifetime license, or a combo of the Apple Password app and #Uplock (lifetime license). The Apple Password app is a bit of a pain to use on non AppleBrowsers though.

The price hike of #1password is something. The family subscription costs for 1 year now incl. tax nearly as much as a life-time unlock of #Strongbox Pro. I need to have a look again how feasible it is to move us all to Strongbox/KeepassXC (for the non-Apple devices).

One of the "features" listed in the 1Password email about subscription pricing going up is "Al-powered item naming".

Yeahhhhh, I'm really glad I left 1Password when they ditched their native Mac app for that Electron garbage. Now AI bullshit in their password manager, too. For "item naming" of all things. They just had to jump on the bandwagon.

After realizing that it was available via Setapp, I thought I’d give Strongbox another try today. Wow, I’m quite impressed by all of its features. I’ve been a 1Password user for many years but so far, this is giving it a run for its money…

@AliveDevil A similar problem I have with my favoured #KeePass Client on #MacOS and #iOS: #Strongbox. The tool was just sold to a sketchy new owner and I do not trust them with the security of my passwords.

But that’s also the nice thing with #KeePass. Not happy with the client anymore? Use another! So minimum #vendorlockin .

@dmnelson did you start clean without restoring backup from iCloud or so?

I did that in the past, but this time just let iOS restore. It feels home really really fast + all the nice things you can now explore.

But yeah passkeys are really useful. #Strongbox was the first app I setup. Access credentials to the sync locations have not been restored.

I was looking at using Strongbox, a #password manager app recommendation from Mastodon to replace #1Password. Just found out that Strongbox was bought by Applause in March 2025, and Applause is owned by Vista Equity. So, #enshittification of #Strongbox is now under way. No thanks. No reason to spend time jumping from one app that is being enshittified by capital greed, just to jump to another one experiencing the same downward spiral.

The simplicity of #Apple #Passwords has its benefits, however, coming from #Strongbox (and previously #1Password), there are still few things I’d love to see getting added in future releases:

• Separate email and username fields.
• Better groups or tag support.
• A keyboard shortcut to quickly reveal the password.
• Proper keyboard support in the menu bar app.

Despite the claims made otherwise, #Strongbox is not #OpenSource software.

@Schimmelreiter bin dran auf jeden Fall und als Passwortmanager nutze ich #Strongbox pro seit 1Password nur noch als Cloud Version verfügbar war, kann ich nur empfehlen!
