For my linocut parliament of owls I made two columns of local owls - like government an which the loyal opposition in this parliament in a tree printed in black against a dark grey evening sky! It reads “A parliament of owls” in gothic lettering and the word Owl is made with an eye and feathers.

Right to left and top to bottom the owls are: Northern saw-whet, Eastern screech, Barred, long-eared, Barn and Great Horned owl. They are printed in shades of brown on white chine collé paper on the grey background.

For #WorldJellyfishDay it’s a smack of jellyfish!

The collective noun for a group of jellyfish is a “smack”. This amuses me, because I imagine them smacking their tentacles together in some sort of deepsea high five. To be honest, marine biologists speak of ‘blooms’ and we do tend to lump in a bunch of soft-bodies marine creatures into the term jellyfish, all of the gelatinous zooplankton in fact.... but ‘a smack of jellyfish’ is 🧵

#linocut #printmaking #jellyfish #typography #termsOfVenery

As described this linocut shows 3 different species of jellyfish with the words ‘A smack of jellyfish’. I show them smacking their tentacles together in some sort of deepsea high five. I've included only those translucent, tentacled umbrella-shaped creatures, which are truly jellyfish, or the major non-polyp form of individuals of the phylum Cnidaria. The typography I designed for the words represents their meaning; "smack" mimics the motion of a smack with the letters colliding; the word "Jellyfish" is made of tentacle and bell-shaped letters. These linoleum block printed jellyfish are printed on Japanese kozo, or mulberry paper. The block is inked 'à la poupée', meaning the multiple colours (blue-black, navy, pale violet and pink ink) are all inked at the same time, in small areas, and the print is pulled all at once. Each print is 15.5" by 12.5" or 39 cm by 32 cm in dimension.

They also look great hanging from a bulldog clip or clothespin. They’re designed so you can have a mini-print to save afterwards and simply crop off the month at the bottom.

Displayed on my wooden mantle with white wall behind are two white postcards with images of my murder of crows and the parliament of owls linocut respectively. Below each is the month (September and October), letters for days of the week and numbers for days of the month.

“Parliament” is in a gothic script. “Owls” has an owl eye for ‘o’ and the remaining letters are feathered. The owls are, right to left and top to bottom: the Eastern screech, Northern saw-whet, long-eared, Barred, Great Horned and the American Barn owls.

This #linocut shows an obstinacy of buffalo in all senses of the words. The collective noun for a group of buffalo is a "obstinacy". Clearly, these are hard-headed beasts. These ones have drawn a line in the sand. I dare you to cross it. Technically, these are American bison (Bison bison), known colloquially in North America as 'buffalo'. These mighty beasts were once obiquitous across the Great Plains. 🧵1/2

Another of my #termsOfVenery print for #PollinatorWeek: The delightful term for a group of moths is an eclipse. This hand-printed lino block print shows 5 of the noctunral moths of Ontario in front of the moon at a lunar eclipse. The 5 moths are: the gorgeous green Luna moth (Actias luna), the yellow and purplish-pink Imperial moth (Eacles imperialis), the Five-spotted Hawk Moth in brown with 🧵1/2

My linocut print of moon at lunar eclipse in oranges and brown against a very dark sky behind 5 moths: the gorgeous green Luna moth (Actias luna), the yellow and purplish-pink Imperial moth (Eacles imperialis), the Five-spotted Hawk Moth in brown with orange spots (Manduca quinquemaculata), the red-orange, black and cream Virgin Tiger Moth (Apantesis virgo), and the black and white White Underwing (Catocala relicta).

In white it reads “An eclipse of” above and “moths” below. I designed the typefaces to suggest the meaning of the words. "Eclipse" is full of crescent moon shapes. "Moths" is written in moth shapes.

One of my favourite #termsOfVenery prints for #pollinatorWeek:

A kaleidoscope of butterflies!

There are three each of the orange Isabella’s Longwings (Nymphalidae Eueides isabella), three yellow Eastern tiger swallowtails (Papilio glaucus), and three blue Red-Spotted Purples (Limenitis arthemis astyanax) in this #linocut kaleidoscope.⠀

This lino block print is printed in black ink on Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper 12.5 inches by 12 inches, or 31.7 cm by 30.5 cm in dimension. Each butterfly involves 'chine collé' (collaged, delicate, Japanese paper) for their glorious colour. They are arrayed with a three-fold symmetry, like images in a toy kaleidoscope. There are three each of the orange Isabella's Longwings (Nymphalidae Eueides isabella), three yellow Eastern tiger swallowtails (Papilio glaucus), and three blue Red-Spotted Purples (Limenitis arthemis astyanax). There is text reading ‘A kaleidoscope of Butterflies’ with a butterfly for the f.

A group of peacocks, like those in this linocut, are called 'an ostentation', for obvious reasons. I am making a series on the weird and wonderful terms of venery - the collective nouns for groups of animals (and other things). Some are evocative, some strange and obscure. This is the fourth in a series of such prints.

The word 'Ostentation' is in a rather rococo and ostentatious typeface.
🧵

This lino block print is printed in metallic and pearlescent inks on Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper 12.5 inches by 8 inches, or 31.7 cm by 20.3 cm in dimension, in a slightly variable edition of eight. It shows a trio of peacocks. The pearlescent ink mimics the beautiful irridescence of those ostentatious peacock feathers. The block is inked 'à la poupée', meaning the multiple colours (indigo, apple green, turquoise and gold) are all inked at the same time, in small areas, and the print is pulled all at once.

Text reads “An Ostentation of Peacocks.” The word 'Ostentation' is in a rather rococo and ostentatious typeface. I designed the font of 'Peacocks' to echo the feathers shapes and 'eyes' on the tail feathers.

This linocut shows a flamboyance of flamingos. The collective noun for a group of flamingos is a "Flamboyance". Isn't that perfect? And, ridiculously fun to say? Try it: "A flamboyance of flamingos." Alliterative, apt, succinct, this flaboyance of three pink and fuchsia flamingos are a chorus line of long-legged aquatic birds about to break out into a can-can routine.

The block is inked 'à la poupée', meaning the multiple colours (pink, fuchsia and black ink) are all inked at the same time, in small areas, and the print is pulled all at once. Text reads “A Flamboyance of Flamingos” in rococo letters for flamboyance and flamingos written in shapes of flamingo necks and heads. Each print is 10" by 12.5" or 25 cm by 39 cm in dimension.

A group of bullfinches is a bellowing, & this linocut shows a bellowing bellowing, singing loudly. I am making a series on the weird & wonderful terms of venery - the collective nouns for groups of animals (& other things). Some are evocative, some strange & obscure. This is the third in a series of such prints.

How could I resist a “bellowing” of bullfinches? We don’t actually have bullfinches (Pyrrhula pyrrhula) 🧵

#linocut #printmaking #termsOfVenery #birds #bullfinches #lettering #mastoArt

These linoleum block printed bullfinches are printed in black ink on Japanese kozo, or mulberry paper with chine collé breasts in pinkish-orange and dun for the males and females respectively. Each print is 14" by 9.25" or 35.6 cm by 23.5 cm in dimension. The typography is designed to match the words. The letters of 'Bellowing' ("to make the loud deep hollow sound characteristic of a bull") are hollow and capitalized. The serifs on the 'B'of bullfinch are evocative of tail feathers. The letters are cursive and organic to suit the birds. The birds have musical staves with notes emanating from their mouths.

This linocut shows a crash of rhinos in all senses of the words. The collective noun for a group of rhinoceros is a "crash". Though would one really need multiple rhino before a "crash" would be a good description? Luckily, my crash of rhino are all on paper. These three are all headed for collision. The typography of the words represents their meaning; "crash" appears to implode and the stout letters of "Rhinos" 🧵

#linocut #printmaking #rhino #termsOfVenery #rhinoceros #typography #mastoArt

My linocut print shows three beige rhinos charging toward one another; the front of a rhino running right from the left, the front of another running left from right side and one in the middle going forward amongst a cloud of dust. Above there is a gold ‘A’ and turquoise ‘CRASH’ and below in black there are the words ‘of RHINOS.’

Today is also International Crow and Raven Appreciation Day and I for one, appreciate the corvids. They are extraordinarily intelligent birds! Here is my murder of crows, part of my #termsOfVenery series of collective nouns for animals series of prints.

The raven is the official bird of the Yukon, in my print with the official flora, fireweed.

Lastly my crow print, inspired by a photo my husband took.

The first two words look like a typewriter typeface with ‘murder’ in red followed by red crow footprints leading down to the crows. The word “crows” is spelled in feathers. As described: The symbols of the Yukon, its official bird, the Raven and its flower, fireweed cover the hand-carved map of the Yukon in this linocut. The block was inked 'à la poupée' (with different colours, pink-magenta and black in different areas) and printed by hand on lovely Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper. Each print is 23.5 cm by 31.8 cm (9.25" by 12.5").

Part of my series of terms of venery (collective nouns for animals) I always liked “a nest of rabbits” because it makes me think of eggs 🪺 and Easter (next week already) but of course, rabbits 🐇 do make nests.

My 11” x 14” linocut reads “A nest of RABBITS” in black ink with a brown nest filled with sleeping bunnies in the middle. The typography I designed so the words represents their meaning; "nest" mimics the shape of a bird's nest with egg-like 'e' and 's'; the word "rabbits" is made of rabbit-shaped letters and a nose-and-whisker 'T'.
