Decided to begin watching Adam Curtis’s #Shifty documentary series on #BBC iPlayer tonight. It was highlighted as one of the best documentaries of 2025.

It’s made up of archive footage from #Thatcher coming to power and the immediate time afterwards.

As someone born in the Winter of Discontent I wanted to understand the time when I was alive before I could remember.

I now know my childhood suspicion and dislike of Thatcher was rooted in her economic incompetence and hatred of working class.

#Mamdani, který představuje výzvu trumpismu, ve volbách nezvítězil ani tak nad aktuálním obyvatelem Bílého domu a jeho #MAGA pohůnky, ale nad hlavním proudem Demokratické strany.

Ve volbách se nestřetli demokraté s republikány, ale demokratická alternativa s demokratickým „business as usual“.

#Demokraté totiž aktuálně nejsou o nic oblíbenější než #Trump, a Mamdaniho vítězství by mohlo, a hlavně mělo, pro stranu, jejíž výkon coby opozice Trumpovu autoritářství je zatím spíše rozpačitý, představovat výrazný impuls.

Demokratický mainstream se totiž od republikánům výrazně neliší v přesvědčení, že co se týče klíčových parametrů statu quo, neexistuje žádná alternativa (jinými slovy, přes všechny rozdíly mají obě strany podobně blízko k autorce výroku „there is no alternative“, Margaret #Thatcher).

Z kritiky zablokování liberální #demokracie v technokratickém konsenzu mezi středovou levicí a středovou pravicí, která vylučuje autentický politický konflikt, vychází pojetí levicového populismu belgické politické teoretičky Chantal #Mouffe. Pravicový #populismus si dokázal monopolizovat emoce, vášně a jazyk „lidové vůle“, který dnes reprezentují často „lidoví“ miliardáři jako Donald Trump nebo Andrej #Babiš. Podle Mouffe musí levicový populismus umět nabídnout pozitivní emocionální identifikaci proti negativní identifikaci populismu pravicového, a namísto vylučování a konstrukci lidu na půdorysu odmítnutí jiných a cizích (muslimů, židů, migrantů, translidí apod.), postavit, či spíše obnovit, původní demokratickou vášeň pro rovnost, důstojnost a solidaritu. Mouffe doporučuje čelit pravicovému populismu, který je zpravidla ve skutečnosti oligarchy usměrňovaným populismem pro lid, levicovým lidovým populismem, jehož cílem by byla nová demokratická hegemonie.

Podobná představa o levicovém populismu dlouho zněla jako utopický projekt. Když došlo na pokusy o praktickou realizaci, často skončily u snahy o resuscitaci národně zabarveného třídního programu 20. století okořeněného o kulturní válečnictví v krajně pravicovém stylu (u nás právě s tímhle kandidovalo hnutí #Stačilo!).
Vítězství Zohrana Mamdaniho přináší naději, že tenhle recept může být úspěšný. Což v situaci, kdy reakce na vlnu národně konzervativního #autoritářství většinou spočívá na nepříliš přesvědčivém defenzívním boji za zachování stávajícího stavu věcí se vším všudy, není vůbec málo.
