I wonder what would have happened if The Image Of A Group had decided to plough their own furrow rather than acquiring the rights to the name "Art of Noise"? I am not really a fan of them, they didn't really sound like Art of Noise, and their #Debussy-esque creations weren't as good as the original conposer, but their debut album was interesting.

Please hold whilst I listen to "Slip of the Tongue" by #ArtOfNoise on repeat. Sometimes I wonder if it might replace "Legacy" as my favourite song.

"Diversion One" or "Beat Box (Diversion One)" by Art of Noise approaches its pinnacle about 3m50s in. The beat is relentless.

If only I had been old enough at the time to hear it in clubs with decent sound systems rather than listening to it on the same cassette player I used to load games into my ZX Spectrum whist doing my homework.

The Art of Noise - Moments in Love

This song always sounds good. In every situation. Jogging, staring at the ceiling, hanging out with friends, driving. Suitable for all moments, perhaps.

Duane Eddy died earlier this week. I first heard him on The Art of Noise's track Peter Gunn.

Here's the music video (and a bonus is Rick Mayall!)

Renowned composer Henry Mancini would have turned 100 years old today. Enjoy a small sample of one of his most famous compositions. As always, there are a handful of cover versions, including Emerson Lake and Palmer who actually turned me onto the Mancini mystique.

[This guest post was written by wbwolf about number 93 on The List. The album was also submitted by wbwolf.]

The Art of Noise started in 1983 when members of the technical crew that was helping Trevor Horn produce Yes’s 90125 and Malcom McLaren’s Duck Rock albums were experimenting with a Fairlight CMI, an early sampling keyboard. The name of the band comes from Italian futurist Luigi Russolo’s 1913 manifesto “L’arte dei Rumori“. The band released an EP and album on Horn’s ZTT label. (The name of the label was derived from the phrase “Zang Tuum Tumb” mentioned in the manifesto.)

In 1985, the rest of the group parted ways from Trevor Horn, and, by 1987, it was down to programmer JJ Jeczalik and pianist/composer/arranger Anne Dudley. They did have some commercial success from their previous album, In Visible Silence, and this led to Art of Noise starting to show up in soundtracks; “Dragnet”, continuing the series of police theme covers for the 1987 Dan Ackroyd and Tom Hanks movie, and “Roller 1”, from The Fat Boys movie Disorderlies, both appear on this album.

What sets this album apart is the structure. This album is the realization of Russolo’s dream of orchestrating the sounds of modern life. Mixed in between and within the tracks are field recordings, short orchestral and choral pieces, and snippets of conversations. As one track flows into the next, the album carries you along on a journey. While the through line isn’t as cohesive as Chill Out by The KLF, In No Sense? Nonsense!‘s ambient mix makes for a compelling listen.

The real centerpiece of the album, both literally and figuratively, is “E.F.L.”. Standing for “English as a Foreign Language”, the track brings together snippets of phrases and airplane sounds, and generally contributes to the theme of movement of the album (“How Rapid?”, “A Day At The Races” “Roller 1”, “One Earth”). It’s one of my favorite Art of Noise tracks and also really ties the album together.

Also of note is that the original 1987 cassette released in US, UK and Canada was one of the first to have the entire album on each side. The CD and cassette versions really emphasize the continuous nature of the album. This is a 41-minute journey well worth taking.

[Alt text for accompanying image: The album artwork is a perhaps a painting of a woman’s head, in distorted profile; alternatively, it may be a photo of a doll’s head. A red ribbon comes out of her mouth, with something that looks like a feather balancing on the end. The band’s name is in large blue and black font in the top right section of the cover, and the album name is in very small black font in the bottom right corner.]

Es gerieten Dinge in Vergessenheit die nicht in Vergessenheit geraten durften.

So verkünde ich nun also, das sie den folgenden Track als Hausaufgabe bis Montag anhören und ein kurzes Fazit hier herunter schreiben.
