#tp4056

I built an Atari Punk Console on a #breadboard few days ago, and now I'm planning how to build a nice #enclosure for it.
I want to fit speaker, audio jack, salvaged #LiPo battery, #TP4056 charging and protection board, boost converter to get the 9 Volt, USB-C socket for charging, and of course some potentiometers, switches, and a minimized board for the #circuit.
Planning the #PCB layout was done using #KiCad, using SMD resistors.

Prototype of the Atari Punk Console. It is built on a half sized solderless breadboardcomponents for building the enclosure. there is a black plastic box, a LiPo battery, boost converter, potentiometer, switches and LEDs lying aroundPCB layout done in KiCad for the minimized circuit. the potentiometers, power, and speaker will be connected using DuPont connectors and pin headersloose fit test with the biggest components inserted into the perfboard. resistors will be placed on the bottom side using SMD components

I was testing my "5V #solar panel" using an adjustable load power tester.

The "MPP" seems to be between 400-500 mA, after which it would fail to charge the battery (voltage falls below 4.2V at ~440mA draw).

Now to figure out how to tweak the miniature R2 resistor on the #tp4056 board...

Spreadsheet + graph measuring current draw vs. panel voltage + calculated power.

My #solar + #tp4056 + #lipo + #esp32 combo was having issues when I connected the esp32 to the tp4056 via crocodile clips for testing the thing out. It would drop voltage below 3V and brown out, rarely managing to boot.

It turns out all I needed to do was solder the damn power connection. Stable power delivery over night, and this is without any power optimization like deep-sleep, sending data every 15s.

Voltage graph of a lithium battery, dense with data points for ~10 hours, slowly dropping from ~4.1V to ~3.8V.

It's alive!

My DIY outdoor weather sensor based on #esp32, #solar panel, #tp4056 battery charger with #lipo battery, #sht30 as the temperature+humidity sensor, #bh1750 as the light intensity sensor, and a voltage divider to monitor the battery voltage. All values are being collected by #esphome running on the esp32 and sent to my #homeassistant running on a raspberry pi.

Now to find a reasonable case for this and throw it somewhere in the garden within the reach of wifi...

The whole setup on a table, with Odroid Go serving as the "on-the-go serial monitor" to view the logs.

The #TP4056 is an amazingly versatile chip, if you skip the USB port it accepts 4.5 to 6V, perfect for a small solar panel. It can then be used to power a microcontroler like an ESP32 that I plan to.

Inspired by my favorite guy with a swiss accent: youtu.be/37kGva3NW8w

However I should have checked my order - my panel easily saturates the 200mA limit of the component I got. And I don't have SMD resistors nor skills.

A very simple solar charging circuit: 5V solar panel -> TP4056 chip -> LiPo cell, saturating the 200mA charging current limit of the component I bought.

New blog post - TP4056 replacement PCB - I made a replacement PCB for the cheap TP4056 lipo charger units. I've added USB C CC resistors and made it easier to replace the Rprog resistor which sets the charging amp level facelesstech.wordpress.com/202

[Bigclivedotcom] busts a myth that those cheap Ebay/Aliexpress TP4056 lithium polymer battery charger modules will end up overcharging your battery if you keep them in circuit powering a load (e.g. a string of LED fairy lights)

Weather Station Dumps CR2032 Cells, Gains 18650

Despite the fact that we're rapidly approaching the year 2022, there are still an incredible number of gadgets out there that you're expected to power with disposable batteries. Sure you can buy rechargeable stand-ins that come in the various shapes and sizes of the traditional alkaline cells, but that's a stopgap at best. For some, if a new gadget doesn't feature an internal Li-ion battery and standardized USB charging, it's a non-starter.

[Danilo Larizza] is one of those people. Bothered by the fact that his Oregon Scientific weather station required a pair of CR2032 coin cells, he set out to replace them with an integrated rechargeable solution. The conversion ending up being easier to implement than he initially expected, and by his calculations, his solution should keep the unit up and running for nearly 40 days before needing to be topped off with a standard USB charger.

Wiring in the new battery.

The first step was determining how much power it actually took to run the weather station. Although the two CR2032 cells were wired in series, and therefore providing a nominal 6 V, he determined through experimentation with a bench power supply that it would run on as little as 3.2 volts. This coincides nicely with the voltage range for a single 18650 cell, and meant he didn't need to add a boost converter into the mix. He notes the weather station does flash a "Low Battery" warning most of the time now, but that seems a fair price to pay.

Confident in the knowledge that the weather station could happily run with an 18650 cell connected in place of the original CR2032s, all [Danilo] needed to do was figure out a way to charge the battery up from time to time. To that end, he reached for a common TP4056 module. This handy little board is a great match for 18650 cells, and is so cheap that there's really no excuse not to have a few of them kicking around your parts bin. You never know when you might need to teach an old gadget new tricks.
