OK, gonna stop now McCallum's bass isn't everything for everyone; it's him, and his style. For a more toned-down example of his work, check out Nugget

He is less out front, less attention-grabbing, but still doing unexpected, beautiful things that make the recording more compelling, more dancy, more "gotta move".
For a look at what he sounds like when he plays mellow, here's Frank Sinatra (the song, not the dead guy)

For his take on jazz, listen to Cake's cover of Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps.

He doesn't "do jazz," but he does jazz.
Final thoughts: Cake was critical listening in the 90s. I know thousands of bands "deserved" fame and only a few got it, but I have no issues with Cake's success; they worked as hard as anyone, were as talented and skilled as anyone. Listen to how tight they are, how their rhythms (sometimes very complicated) are surgically precise. How they find grooves where other bands might just have a "dull part of the song."
The end. But I'll probably squee a bit sometime about Cake's guitarist, Xan McCurdy
