The Golden Gate Quartett – Glory Hallelujah – Amiga

Amiga released two Golden Gate Quartet LPs. One is a really awful pop gospel album, for which they are famous, and the other is the highest form of the gospel road genre. The Golden Gate Quartet - Glory Hallelujah by Amiga was the very first record I ever owned. I was actually supposed to get an Elvis record for Christmas. Since that was a product of capitalist decadence, it wasn't available in communist record stores, but the music of the American working class was. I had no idea about that, and I didn't care, I was a kid. But I still love that LP to this day. I now have a large collection of LPs by gospel quartets. The influence of this music cannot be overestimated. Soul and doo-wop can be traced directly back to it, and Elvis was also greatly influenced by it and had a gospel quartet, the Jordanaires, as his backing vocal group.

Heute hatte ich das Megavergnügen im Potsdamer Nikolaisaal die fantastische Sängerin Cécile McLorin Salvant zu erleben. Für mich ist sie eine der besten Sängerinnen ever. Ein Wahnsinn.
Und was dieses Konzert noch zu einem ganz besonderen macht(e): es war das einzige auf dieser Tour in Deutschland.
