we struggle with the depths
of these many million years -
the idea
that we are just surviving
in the scabs
of mother earth

but feel her hand
and watch her scratching
down
to the bleeding bone

at our persistent
irritation

her hot blood, rising

but under bright winter stars 
a broad manhattan sky 
and shoppers filling streets below 
and every tree
 a sort of mistletoe in white

the fairy tale becomes 
so simply disappointing

no matter how hard you try
reindeers don't seem to know
when push comes to shove
how to glow
or fly

a poem

The person in front of you today
upon the sterile theatre table
has been mistreated in their youth
and suffered many traumas
both physical and of the mind
but none is the excuse for recent
uncouth bloody violence.
We found a tumour in the brain
and keyhole surgery alas did not
address the problem - a metastasis
was to blame, perhaps; worse,
the chemotherapy we deployed
at certain risk of widespread harm
has also failed to purge the cancer.
But do not be alarmed, as we now
as last resort reveal a special treatment
guaranteed to prevent all reoccurrence:
we insert a smoothie blender, here,
precisely where the open mouth leads
directly to the neural stem; it spins loud
but briefly, and behold all aberrant
behaviour has been finally controlled.

At last, we lowly servants
of the caring state declare
this most critical of patients
cured.

amidst the gloom
of broken towers
bright phosphorous flowers
from a child's bedroom
illuminating
beyond a filament of doubt
the shadows
in each cold invading heart

above the empty strand
where "new" land
crashes into ruddy sea
a battered promenade is found

but only rust and blood
is bound to be there, with laughing
gulls and sideways crabs
picking over thin remains

behind vast concrete dunes
small ghosts wisp out
from flattened dust-filled cellars
crying soft for vanished parents

and careful cold revenge
