Employee protests against Microsoft's contracts with the Israeli government preceded this measure, with multiple disruptions occurring at the company's Build developer conference. Microsoft defends its action on the grounds of reducing mass emailing.

Quite frankly, I meant to write a little bit about this story from February 7th a little while ago, but as some of you may know - things in my meatspace life have been, difficult, to put it politely. I've got a little free time this evening however, so let's take a brief look at this Truthout post talking about a bill being proposed by Michigan Democrat (and Squad member) Rashida Tlaib.
The short version here is covered in the first couple of paragraphs, Tlaib's bill would "ban members of Congress, their spouses and dependent children from trading and owning stocks in defense contractors." This is of course, a fantastic idea, if only because a society that allows the people who decide whether or not to sell arms, and fight wars, to profit from those decisions directly, is a society that's going to find itself selling a lot of weapons, and fighting a lot of wars - proxy or otherwise. Perhaps you know of such a society? I do, I'm living in it.
Crucially however, it's important to understand that this bill is not just about preventing wars, but rather preventing the open corruption in our government that allows folks whose political ambitions are being openly funded by defense contractors, from profiting directly from their decision to *checks notes* funnel literally billions of dollars to companies who profit from violence and murder. A point Tlaib made explicitly in a public statement she released when proposing the bill:
“My colleagues continue to funnel billions of American tax dollars to the very same defense contractors that many of them are invested in and taking campaign donations from,” Tlaib said in a statement. “It is shameful that some of my colleagues are profiting financially when they vote to support wars and weapons manufacturing. Members of Congress should not be able to use their positions of power to get rich from defense contractors while voting to pass more funding to bomb innocent civilians.”
Of course, you might be asking yourself why the people who vote on whether or not we sell weapons, and go to war, are allowed to take campaign funding from defense contractors at all, let alone privately trade stocks to enrich themselves through companies that engage in these activities. To which I say, "that's a REALLY good question, that strikes at the heart of why the US is never not at war, or involved in a proxy war, at any point in time anymore."
Is this a complete solution to that problem? No, it isn't. But it's a start, and I sincerely hope Tlaib is somehow able to drag this legislation across the finish line. Naturally however, I don't have high hopes, as historically it has been almost impossible to get Congress to agree they should make it harder for government officials to profit directly from holding office and their relationships with American corporations. As Upton Sinclair once noted, "It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it."
