Outback Queensland town of Winton, dinosaur capital of Australia, now with added Dark Sky Community certification!

Definitely on my list of places to visit. Having watched our stars slowly disappear, it’d be amazing to see the Milky Way through a truly dark sky.

Zebra Finch are mainly grey, with characteristic black ‘tear drop’ eye stripes and ‘zebra like’ black and white barring on the rump and upper tail. The throat and upper breast are pale grey, with fine black barring, and there is a broad black band on upper chest. The sides of the belly are chestnut with many white spots. The remainder of the belly and the undertail are white. The male is distinguished from the female by its chestnut cheek patches, a character that gave the species the alternative name of Chestnut-eared Finch. Both sexes have red eyes and bill. The legs and feet are orange yellow. Slightly left of centre a Zebra Finch perches on the edge of a black plastic tub. It is facing left with its body pointing back left. Background is scrubby bushes with olive green leaves.

PERSONAL MATTERS
A gathering of citizens and returned soldiers took place at the R.S.A. rooms last evening, to bid farewell to Padre #Winton, who is shortly leaving New Zealand for Australia. Colonel Hall referred to Padre Winton’s work amongst the “Diggers” during the war. The Padre was, he said, a man who did his duty unflinchingly, and helped to make the lives of the soldiers more amenable. Colonel Hall wished Padre Winton every advancement in his sphere of life and work. Among others who paid tributes to the popularity and war services of Padre Winton was Sir John Luke, M.P., who said that the work performed by the Padre in looking after the welfare of our soldiers entitled him to the respect of the people of New Zealand. Padre Winton, who feelingly responded, was accorded three hearty cheers, and good wishes were expressed for his future happiness, and continued success in his work.
