Ongoing protests won some permanent visas - including the 13 who were not recaptured In 2003 Wommera was permanently closed. refugees' actions at Woomera in 2002 showed that militant protest could force governments to grant concessions and begin to turn the tide of mass opinion.

1,000 activists rallied outside the detention centre on 30 March 2002, the refugees held their own protest inside the centre, and when the demonstrators outside approached, they began scaling the five-metre-high fence and leaping into the crowd.
Although most of the 50 refugees who escaped that day were subsequently captured and returned to imprisonment, some were never caught. With ongoing protests from refugees at Woomera, many were granted permanent visas - including the 13 who were not recaptured on 30 March - and by 2003 the centre was permanently closed. While the Australian government's treatment of refugees has subsequently worsened, refugees' actions at Woomera in 2002 showed that militant protest could force governments to grant concessions and could begin to turn the tide of mass opinion.
