When we think about archaeologists in stories, it's usually the brave adventurer seeking long-lost worlds... but this can be culturally problematic today. That doesn't mean there's no stories to tell about things left behind. 🧵⬇️

We're counting down until we talk relics at Writing the Occult on 10 May, so figured it's time we do a little relics roll call. And just to show not all relics relate to the major religions, here's a magical fairy flag from the Isle of Skye: clan MacLeod's Am Bratach Sith.🧵⬇️

We're counting the days until the next Writing the Occult, so figured it's time we do a little relics roll call - a way to introduce you to some of the weird objects from history that are venerated or feared. And why not start with the literal head of Saint John the Baptist? 🧵⬇️

A text-heavy graphic features the same details as in the threaded posts. Pictured at left is the relic of the head of St John the Baptist, located in Amiens Cathedral: it is a very old and brown skull, minus jaw, which is housed in a brass plate.

Where there's relics, there's cultures conquered - especially when it comes to the European "age of discovery". Who better to tackle the horror from colonialism than Mexican-American writer V. Castro? She's joined the crew for Writing the Occult: Relics. Meet her 🧵⬇️

Ever wondered what that cursed relic could really do for you? Whether that haunted painting really could kill? These are questions Rebecca Stone Gordon loves to explore, and we are blessed to have this biological anthropologist and horror scholar join us for Writing the Occult: Relics.

Ritual comes in all forms in fiction writing, so we've asked some of the best and brightest to tell us more about their favourite examples. Today, LMK Sheppard—whose book 'Faith Horror: Cinematic Visions of Satanism, Paganism and Witchcraft, 1966–1978', is now available via McFarland—gives us a few visual feasts to consider. 🧵⬇️

While Writing the Occult: Ritual is much more concerned with the occult practices that make their way into storylines, we thought it apt to ask our speakers about their own writing rituals to help create the mood. Here's what Tracy Fahey had to say:

"I write anywhere and everywhere, but best outdoors, near water, on cream, lined paper, with a Uniball Eye Micro pen. (And am very much open to sponsorship offers by luxe stationery companies!)"

The finale of Writing the Occult: Ritual sees some of the best writers in the folk & occult horror worlds gather to discuss the role ritual plays in their work—inspirations, creations, processes & more. We span the 4 corners (sort of), with Lee Murray (NZ), Robert P Ottone (US), Stephanie Ellis (UK), and Kev Harrison (Portugal), all ably chaired by essayist Lindsey Trout Hughes.

Ahead of Writing the Occult: Ritual, panelist Robert P. Ottone reveals his not-so-secret love of Ira Levin: "I'm a huge fan of Rosemary's Baby, mostly because it takes its time, draws you in, but also sprinkles the ritualistic aspect of what the cult is doing all throughout, right in your face. It's exciting when the danger is shown to you, and you don't think much of it, it's very similar to how evil works in reality."

(2/3) Stoker gave the vampire a kick into consciousness, but what of its legacy? That's something A.R. James and Dawn Kurtagich will discuss on 28 October. I've just seen an outline of their discussion & Holy F*ck this is going to be amazing. Gothic feminism? Vampires as empowerment? Yes please!
