Seasons greetings. Wishing you all a safe and organised festive season.

A Christmas tree with two fairy lights talking to each other. One says "Remember when this was a unionised tree. If one of us didn't work, no one worked". The other bulb says #Aww the good old days".

Call for proposals: we're putting together a great program for our May conference in #Tacoma, #Washington, and if you're working in #labor #history in the #PNW, we want you to be part of it! We are especially interested in hearing from folks doing nontraditional #organizing or with diverse historical perspectives you'd like to share. Non-academic speakers are encouraged.

Please boost to help us find amazing presenters we haven't met yet!

Call for Proposals: PNLHA Labor History Conference, May 5 & 6, 2023, WA State History Museum, Tacoma WA

Labor Resurgence
Learning From Recurring Conflict With Capital

The 2023 PNLHA Conference will look at the latest labor resurgence, sparked by Starbucks and Amazon workers and spread to many more formerly unorganized workers, and its relation to other historic resurgence of labor organizing and power. The conference will explore the current corporate backlash and former attacks by capital and the state, such as the Palmer Raids and Red Scares. And finally we want to talk about how workers have fought back and are fighting back today.

We invite proposals for academic research, panels/roundtables, individual presentations, interactive workshops, drama, music, art, memorabilia displays and other forms of presentation.

Proposals Due by January 31, 2023
Please send a short summary of your proposal and a brief biography of all presenters and any audio-visual needs to Tom Lux at email pnlha2@gmail.com or mail to PNLHA, PO Box 75662, Seattle WA 98175.

Presenters are asked to register for the conference but may apply for a fee waiver.

Labor costs increased 5.3% over the past year. But prices rose 7.1%.

The real purchasing power of American workers continues to drop.

This is absolutely not the time for more interest rate hikes that make it even harder for working people to keep the lights on. Hello?

May or may not have chanted "union contract!" when the university administrators processed past the faculty seating to leave graduation this afternoon.Only loud enough for them to hear - the orchestra was playing.

A decision to #strike among the less-well paid is never taken lightly (due to the loss of pay in the short term) & during this #winterofdiscontent we should all recognise the strikers have been backed into a corner & are saying #EnoughIsEnough!

That rich politicians & commentators think this is a choice by 'militants' reveals that for them (with their savings & wealth) a strike might be discretionary politics, a choice made ideologically... but for the real strikers this is about life & death!

The #strike is finally over at #TheNewSchool. I am feeling relieved. #Solidarity was painful but it worked.

Solidarity with the UC workers who are in their fourth week of the biggest strike in US higher education history. Let me remind you: absent the workers in a university, there's nothing. Workers not only deserve better wages & benefits, the quality of a UC education depends on it.

NEW: Delta pilots just won a 34% raise after voting 99% to authorize a strike.

They're leading an uprising of pilots against management at all of America's largest airlines.

Like rail workers, pilots have gone years without a raise & say they’ve hit their breaking point.

If we can spend ~$850 billion on defense, why can't we guarantee paid sick leave and provide health care for all Americans?

Fun fact: part of the reason why "rankings of colleges will always be with us" is that there will always be enough people repeating that "rankings of colleges will always be with us."

@SueASmith it is astonishing that the Government would assume a likely backlash. Their stance on #unions and #strikes shows a complete lack of understanding that these people working in the #PublicSector are professionals; highly educated, woefully underpaid, overworked, understaffed, and at breaking point in systems which are crumbling. The very electorate which #UKGovernment needs to value and cherish. Public support remains as we are all affected by the underfunding of these services.

This year was a big one for #unions. Preliminary data (that's going to be revised up) shows election wins are the highest since 2015. #Strikes are up nearly 50 percent this year. vox.com/recode/23451232/2022-c

Learn about the #history of #unionization in the #VideoGame industry in Polygon's The Rise of the Video #Game #Union.

"For decades, #studios across the industry and the globe, studios both big and small, have pushed their workers to the limit through low pay, brutal crunch, and discrimination. ... #Workers had little leverage, and employers wielded creative careers as a cudgel, saying that game developers should feel lucky to be able to do what they love."
