📢 New paper out in Ecotoxicology! 🪲🌿

We tested whether a common glyphosate-based weed killer harms European earwigs.

🧪 Despite exposure to high doses, we found no major effects on maternal care, development, or immunity.

This surprising resilience raises new questions: Why are earwigs so tolerant to chemical pollution?

Un chercheur français du CNRS refoulé des Etats-Unis pour avoir exprimé "une opinion personnelle sur la politique menée par Trump". In our latest preprint, we showcase how to use a phylogenetic meta-analysis of variance to test evolutionary hypotheses across species.

We collected data for 172 birds (314 populations) to test patterns of stabilising selection and canalisation for wing length.

Given it’s international women’s day, I’d like to encourage you all, but especially Dutch men to read these ‘anti-acknowledgments’ in a PhD thesis. This is not from somewhere else, it’s from Delft. And it’s not from the 1950s, but from the present. Unfortunately what academic life and culture in The Netherlands is still like. The author is just one of the few who actually spoke up about it, but there are many stories like it.

Our revised preprint following peer-review: “Why did the human brain size evolve: a way forward”. We suggest a simulation-based inference approach to infer why the human brain size evolved.
ecoevorxiv.org/repository/view

Illustrating this approach, we analyse a model that recovers major patterns of human development and evolution.

We discuss how, counter-intuitively, the human brain size, seemingly one of the most extraordinary existing adaptations, is not an adaptation in the model but a spandrel or by-product of selection for something else.

This finding refers to what the human brain size is in *this* model, not necessarily in reality. We suggest that a simulation-based inference approach could now be pursued to inferring what the human brain size is in reality, not just in one model.

In their Review, Alex Little and Frank Seebacher reveal that true costs of plasticity are rare, which challenges existing evolutionary theory and emphasizes the need for clearer definitions and a broader research focus in the plasticity field
