People are still not paying nearly enough attention to what @pluralistic wrote here:

“The American right is a brittle coalition.”

The topic above is a prime example. There are two MAGA constituencies here — employers and workers — who think they’re about to get exactly opposite things. Both are going along with the ICE program because they think they’re the ones who will really get what they want in the end. At least one of them is going to get screwed over.

It's a huge mistake to think of the right as a stable, unified force, marching to victory after inevitable victory. The American right is a brittle coalition led by a handful of plutocrats who have convinced a large number of turkeys to vote for Christmas.

The right wing coalition needs to pander to forced-birth extremists, racist extremist, Christian Dominionist extremists …frothing anti-Communist cranks, vicious homophobes and transphobes, etc, etc. Pandering to all these groups isn't easy: for one thing, they often want opposite things – the post-Roe forced birth policies that followed the Dobbs decision are wildly unpopular among conservatives, with the exception of a clutch of totally unhinged maniacs that the party relies on as part of a much larger coalition. Even more unpopular are policies banning birth control, like the ones laid out in Project 2025. Less popular still: the proposed ban on no-fault divorce. Each of these policies have different constituencies to whom they are very popular, but when you put them together, you get Dan Savage's "Husbands you can't leave, pregnancies you can't prevent or terminate, politicians you can't vote out of office.”

The constituency for "husbands you can't leave, pregnancies you can't prevent or terminate, politicians you can't vote out of office" is very small. Almost no one in the GOP coalition is voting for all of this, they're voting for one or two of these things and holding their noses when it comes to the rest.

"Large swathes of China's economic heartland are set to roast in temperatures [up to 40C, or 104F] over the coming week.

, which meteorologists link to climate change, has emerged as a major challenge for Chinese policymakers. As well as scorching croplands and eroding farm incomes, higher temperatures can affect manufacturing hubs and disrupt operations in key port cities, and strain already overburdened healthcare systems."

Insecure Woman Doesn’t Like Eating In Front Of Surveillance State

LOS ANGELES—Attributing her behavior to insecurity about the government, local woman Kirsten Sears told reporters Monday that she did not like eating in front of the surveillance state. “I try to remember the government is more interested in my ideology than my macronutrients, but still, every time, I get so embarrassed,” said Sears,…

#DigitalSovereignty is a noble goal for organisations, from companies to governments. It’s more about infrastructure and data usage/storage.

For people I’d prefer to talk about #DigitalIndependence, meaning you should be in control of the dataflows that connect you with the rest of the digital world.

MobilePay, Coop, nogle bank-apps?

#MobilePay #Coopapp #google #fairphone #murena #e_os

Biohackers Encoded Malware in a Strand of DNA
Researchers planted a working hacker exploit in a physical strand of
DNA.
In new research they plan to present at the USENIX Security conference on
Thursday, a group of researchers from the University of Washington has shown
for the first time that it’s possible to encode malicious software into physical
strands of DNA, so that when a gene sequencer analyzes it the resulting data
becomes a program that corrupts gene-sequencing software and takes control
of the underlying computer. While that attack is far from practical for any real
spy or criminal, it's one the researchers argue could become more likely over
time, as DNA sequencing becomes more commonplace, powerful, and
performed by third-party services on sensitive computer systems. And, perhaps
more to the point for the cybersecurity community, it also represents an
impressive, sci-fi feat of sheer hacker ingenuity.

The account migration seems to have gone ok! The Mastodon developers are really doing a great job. When I think about how much work @evanprodromou & @cwebber did to show the world that federation *can* work— I admit I was a naysayer because I tend to think capitalism has too much control of software to give control back to users.

This is a clear counterexample.

To translate formal Dutch to informal English: “bro, are you saying that if an undocumented immigrant calls us, the cops, and says ‘help help I’m being murdered’, we’re not allowed to go save them? do we need to ask to see someone’s passport before we pull them out of a burning fire? we, the cops, find this new law profoundly fucked up” politie.nl/nieuws/2025/juli/4/

This is for all the people who get all righteous about "illegal immigration". Get a grip.

The image is divided into six sections with text highlighting historical injustices. The top row shows images of the Holocaust and hiding Jews, emphasizing that the Holocaust was legal, but hiding Jews was criminalized. The middle row depicts slavery and the act of freeing slaves, stating that slavery was legal, but freeing slaves was criminalized. The bottom row shows segregation and protesting racism, pointing out that segregation was legal, but protesting racism was criminalized. At the bottom, there's a message: "Friendly reminder: legality isn't a guide to morality."

And one of the most important takeaways from her and other authors (and the Tesla boycott) is:

You have to stop or minimize giving the tech-bros money. Yes many of your friends may be on FB/IG/Xitter/etc., it is cute to talk to GPT and it may be inconvenient to not use Amazon, Uber, AirBnb, etc. but it will also be very inconvenient to be a serf in a real authoritarian technocracy. This is not a hyperbole.
