I have a few #Indigenous in #BritishColumbia friends trying to migrate to Mastodon this week. I don't have capacity to write up a beginner's guide for #NativePeoples seeking to migrate over right now - I'm out of spoons today. Putting this out there to #NativeMastodon & #IndigenousMastodon - if you have a beginner's link for our #NativeFriends - post reply here. I'll share this with my native pals in migration process.

Please retoot & boost to help my native friends moving over.

Not much of a map, but stunning for what it tells of change, on so many levels.
In 1903, eastern Oklahoma was still land held by the "5 Civilized Tribes". You needed permission to put in infrastructure. Here, T.M. Buffington, Chief of the Cherokee and Pleasant Porter "Chief of Muskogee Nation" sign off on putting in the latest technology of a Telephone and Telegraph line. First Nations leaders putting in the network of the future. #native #nativeamerican #maps #oldmaps #technology

A simple manuscript chart that shows part of what was "Indian Territory" in 1903 and where the "Telephone and Telegraphy Line" would go, connecting the region with the latest technologyA photo of the Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, T.M. Buffington. He was a hulking man, that got in President Teddy Roosevelt's face, during a treaty signing, and took a horse shoe and said, "If you break this treaty..." then he took the horse shoe with his bare hands and wrenched it straight, dropped in on the floor and walked out.

It’s always worth reading David Blight and this is a thoughtful piece connecting the 1850s to today. But I think the emphasis on #SCOTUS—comparing Dred Scott in the 1850s and our modern reactionary Court—is misguided for a number of important reasons. nytimes.com/2022/12/21/magazin 1/

My latest for
#Highcountrynews
regarding the likelihood that #salmon and #steelhead historically ascended the Skagit River above the area the city of Seattle built its dams beginning in 1919, contrary to the city's claims, with implications for fish passage. The city's dams are in the heart of the #UpperSkagitIndianTribe 's usual and accustomed area.

Just discovered via @yrochat "Lausanne 1830: Stories in History," an educational game that puts the player in the role of a census-taker. I have a hard time expressing just how thrilling this premise is to my geeky #histodon self. lausanne1830.ch/wp-content/gam

If you're like me, then you were really happy to learn about Mastodon's enthusiastic support for image descriptions, and you were eager to join in.

Then you went to actually write something and realized you have no idea how to present visual info in a way that is helpful/enjoyable to those who are #VisuallyImpaired or #Blind.

I found this guide really informative: uxdesign.cc/how-to-write-an-im

Post-viral Edit: Don't forget to give the author some love on medium. They did the work!

Occasionally, we will feature new publications on themes related to the New Fascism Syllabus. In our latest weblog post, Lucie Fremlova provides the first detailed study of queer Roma, who continue to face discrimination both under authoritarian and liberal regimes.

White House released federal guidance on #Indigenous Knowledge today: whitehouse.gov/ostp/news-updat

In addition to being an important policy document, the guidance should serve as a good example of #histSci / #histSTM and #STS informing #scipol - possibly a good primary source for students!

#histodons UW-Madison has a #Native student house on a city block that the university intends to develop. In a contentious webinar last night, admins suggested it has structural integrity issues, paired with a proposal that an #Indigenous space might be consolidated with other student affinity groups. In anticipation of debate about the imperative of Native students keeping their own building, I'm trying to get a sense of other campus configurations. Which #universities have a Native house?

That was the message of Wamsutta Frank James, a Wampanoag man whose censored speech in 1970 identified the true culprit of the trouble: historians (now known as #histodons!) A reliable path to the past does not run through memory but rather through accurate history, which must include Native knowledge of the past. James' words helped spur the creation of the #NationalDayofMourning. To wit, here's a toast to all the more accurate paths to the past we have all yet to walk together.

As we discuss the merits of a source created 400 years after the event it allegedly depicts, I show my students other Ferris paintings. Turns out, the guy did a whole series paintings depicting seminal moments in American history, many of which represent #Native people. They illustrate four foundational myths about Native people. All of these, I think, are consolidated in the shorthand of what we might call "Thanksgiving myths." Such myths make for great holidays, but pretty bad histories.

Hello, world! I’m a legal scholar who tends to be overcommitted. But I’m always grateful for new connections, research, and conversations with scholars in my fields of interest and those related. I look forward to hearing more about your conferences, drafts, and new ideas—especially projects that relate to American colonialism, Native nations, and United States constitutional law and history.

Boozhoo! Hello! Here's a little #introduction. With family from #TurtleMountain, I'm a #historian or #histodon who teaches #Indigenous, #education, and #environmental histories. Ask me about my book project on #JohnDewey, America's most prominent philosopher of education and democracy and his relationship with Indian #BoardingSchools. In my more-than-academic life, I enjoy #fantasy, #gaming, and #Tolkien, among other geeky pursuits. I'm always happy to think together.
