@Psy_Fer_ That's so cool. I'm really glad to hear that you made it! It's a huge accomplishment imo. I hope to also manage the transition to a FT scientist with job security, and hope that ppl like us can pull up some additional deserving folks from our communities along with us.

Thanks for your reply. I can't tell whether it's meant to be a refutation or an affirmation of the point I am attempting to make, but nonetheless congratulations.

In general I urge social activists to be ware of the generalization: "see, the system is working fine, because if this one homeless person can make it Harvard, than anyone can." When in fact the system has institutionalized inequities that are both unnecessary and harmful to society.

If your lab is hiring, please consider where you advertise for this amazing opportunity. Among your applicants, "highly motivated" candidates might look like someone who works two jobs to support themselves while trying to do science on the side.

What is a busy PI with a lab opening to do, when hundreds of CVs cross their path for their ECR training opportunities? One metric is to select for ppl based on how far they've come, rather than only considering how high they've flown.

Hiring a person from an underprivileged background, will have a dramatic positive impact on that person's whole family.

There are many researchers that are just as capable and hard-working, but don't look as good on paper, due to factors other than merit.

I believe that increasing the diversity of applicants and hires could be one of the most impactful actions busy PIs could take, besides voting, in protecting our social progress under the new US administration.

I know we're all familiar with the importance of inclusive hiring practices, but it's worth re-examining hiring criteria every once in a while to keep up with best practices. Now is an especially strategic time to do so.

Fewer botanists reflects a larger problem caused by reduced academic training in taxonomy & organismal biology. The problem is acute for invertebrates and other inconspicuous (but potentially ecologically & economically important) taxa.
