Saw Green Day for the seventh time on Friday at Oracle Park. Fantastic show. It was amazing seeing Dookie and American Idiot both played in their entirety, especially since Friday was the 20th anniversary of American Idiot's release.

Just arrived and I can't wait to sit down with it. I heard about this book and pre-ordered it because the author @christopher_brown is here on Mastodon.

The cover of a book titled "a natural history of empty lots. Field notes from urban edgelands, back alleys and other wild places" by Christopher Brown. The cover photo shows some type of indistinct concrete structure completely overgrown with vines and wildflowers.

Today I learned a little bit about #quantum #tunneling as it facilitates #nuclear #fusion within the #sun, which evidently is NOT HOT ENOUGH for fusion to occur based on “classical #physics.” Enjoy the rabbit hole!

I hope all the #moms out there had a great #Mother’s Day. Mine came across the country to hang out with her #grandchildren (and me, I guess ;)) for a long weekend. I made her a handdrawn/written #card for the first time in 30+ years. I think she liked it!

Poorly drawn stick figure of my mom wearing a “Worlds Best Mom” shirt on the front of my handdrawn card.

A sign that extreme #political positions dominating #congress will no longer be the norm?

Millions of people visit #GrandCanyon #NationalPark every year. I would guess that less than 1% see it from the Colorado River. I’m lucky enough to be in that 99th percentile as of a couple weeks ago. Pic 1: me at the river after a hike down from the rim. Pic 2: a sign I missed on the way down, but related to on the way up. For the record, I knew what I was getting into.

Me at the Colorado River inside the Grand CanyonA warning sign near the top of the Grand Canyon advises hikers of the risks of walking to the river and back in one day.

@eestileib me too - definition of a catastrophic failure. Can’t believe anyone could have survived being on it. So sad.

@lkngrrr I mean, I generally agree on your comparison, but they are two different types of physics, impact vs. thrust. And as for the “shit happens” part, my response is “yes, and.” Yes shit happens, AND more modern pier design and process protocols *could* have led to a different outcome. Better ability to deflect impact, along with impact resistance improvements, AND better nav emergency procedures/redundancies, AND improved bridge engineering might have worked together to make this less disastrous. And I hope these things are looked at more carefully in ports throughout the world as a result.

I’ve driven over the Key #bridge dozens (hundreds?) of times and navigated under it dozens. The crazy thing to me is that these #ships are so large now that the mini islands that are built to protect/support the bridge piers clearly had no chance. When this bridge was initially designed, the engineers weren’t planning for this scale. This accident is a tragedy, but hopefully also a warning for bridge #infrastructure managers around the world.

Secondary power/navigation systems/procedures will also get an overhaul. I imagine there will be a lot more tug boats at the ready when these mega-ships are near critical infrastructure in the future. Hindsight makes things seem so simple . . .

It’s a super sad day for #baltimore

Boosts welcomed and appreciated, please spread this message of unity.

On Saturday we (my wife, kinds, and I) had the honor and privilege to meet Martin Luther King III and his immediate family during a pre-kickoff event for this five-year campaign. Their message on Saturday was one of unity and finding common ground.
The Kings are amazing, humble, kind, and hopeful people who are living their lives in service to honor Dr. King and his legacy.

Now we can be a part of this legacy too!

Realizing the Dream is a bold movement to transform America through 100 million hours of service by the 100th anniversary of Dr. King’s birth. It’s a call for us all to reach out to people and causes in need – and make a difference through acts of love, compassion and goodwill.

So, join us, and help make this dream come true!
