Years of false starts, mistimed visits, and film-era frustrations finally paid off with this shot—a local strain of rainbow trout caught mid-jump at the Pine Creek Weir near Eagle Lake, CA.
This spot has long been a key site for trout trying to spawn naturally up Pine Creek. While drought and low spring flows have changed management strategies (like switching to electrofishing at Gallatin Marina), there is plenty of flow right not to draw trout up the stream.
Timing was everything. I nearly gave up that day—watching a huge school swirl around for nearly an hour without a single jump. But persistence, a burst-ready digital camera, and a lucky break gave me this frame. It’s more than a photo—it’s a win years in the making.

I’ve occasionally visited the Pine Creek Weir and fish trap near Spalding above Eagle Lake in Lassen County, CA, to watch the local rainbow trout try to spawn. For years, these fish relied on Pine Creek, but low flows often doomed the run. The weir was built to intercept them for conservation, but in recent years, mature trout have been collected by electrofishing near Gallatin Marina due to poor streamflow. With better flow this year, it’s unclear if they’ll return to using the traps. My first attempt to photograph jumping trout there was with a Canon Rebel X from Walmart back in the 1900s—three wasted rolls of film and no fish. Since then, it’s usually been either fish but no camera or camera but no fish. A few days ago, I tried again—no jumps. This time, I went later in the day and was rewarded with a big school and some jumping. I chatted with a nice couple, and with my modern camera firing at 15 fps, I captured over 200 frames—finally getting a few shots I like, including this one

Floating the Sacramento River in early April, I brought along my 720nm infrared filter to capture the spring foliage in a different light—literally. With a full-spectrum camera and reversed red/blue channels in post, the newly leafed deciduous trees glow in near-white, contrasting beautifully with the stark, lifeless snags.

This quiet moment, with my son casting for trout nearby, turned into an unexpectedly poetic capture—life and death frozen in IR.

#InfraredPhotography #SacramentoRiver #NatureContrast #SpringFoliage #SurrealLandscape
While taking a lazy float on the Sacramento River with my son in his drift boat, I kept an eye out for scenes to shoot with my new 720-nanometer infrared filter on a full-spectrum modified camera. I picked up this filter with fresh spring foliage in mind, and the deciduous trees around Redding, California, were just leafing out on this early April day. New growth contains high levels of chlorophyll, making it especially reflective in the near-infrared spectrum. The 720nm filter blocks visible light except the deep red edge, allowing near-IR to pass. Most digital sensors can see up to ~1000nm—far beyond human vision.

In post, swapping the red and blue channels gives a subtle bluish sky (which comes out red straight from the camera), and custom white balance helps produce bright, surreal foliage.

As my son anchored to cast for trout, I noticed the contrast between pale new leaves and the dark dead snags—an eerie but beautiful scene.

Zabriskie Point at sunrise: it wasn’t the perfect morning we’d envisioned. Low clouds obscured the first light, and a crowded overlook made it tough to find a spot. But we held our ground and waited. Eventually, the sun broke through and bathed the badlands in a golden glow that made it all worthwhile.

This dramatic landscape, shaped by ancient lakebed sediments and time, features the iconic Manly Beacon—a towering formation named after William Lewis Manly, who helped guide stranded pioneers to safety in the 1800s. The layered textures and pastel colors of the terrain are like something from another world.

Zabriskie Point in Death Valley is one of the park’s most iconic overlooks, formed from ancient lakebed sediments and shaped by erosion into a surreal landscape. My wife and I arrived early, hoping for a vivid sunrise, as high clouds looked promising. Unfortunately, low clouds blocked the sun’s rise, muting the colors. A crowded photo workshop made finding a good spot tricky, but we waited patiently off to the side. Eventually, the sun broke through, casting golden light across the badlands. The prominent peak to the right is Manly Beacon, named for pioneer William Manly.

Darby Creek, PA

I have accumulated a lot of flies, mostly the ones I bought 🙃
The ones I tied myself are nearly all gone because I use them first. So, no more tying or purchasing until I use up the flies I already have 🤔

I should do something similar when I buy “wrong beer”…😅

Chris La Tray is feeling like a poet again (and also shares some poems from 2025’s Voices for the West compilation).

"What I mean by “feeling like a poet” is the sense of awareness to the world beyond the task list. Stopped in to Elizabeth Park in West Hartford CT, US to see the tulips on a truly glorious day. Park filled with strolling folks, babies, elders, dog walkers. Daffodils still going and lilacs just starting too.
