Floating the Sacramento River in early April, I brought along my 720nm infrared filter to capture the spring foliage in a different light—literally. With a full-spectrum camera and reversed red/blue channels in post, the newly leafed deciduous trees glow in near-white, contrasting beautifully with the stark, lifeless snags.

This quiet moment, with my son casting for trout nearby, turned into an unexpectedly poetic capture—life and death frozen in IR.

While taking a lazy float on the Sacramento River with my son in his drift boat, I kept an eye out for scenes to shoot with my new 720-nanometer infrared filter on a full-spectrum modified camera. I picked up this filter with fresh spring foliage in mind, and the deciduous trees around Redding, California, were just leafing out on this early April day. New growth contains high levels of chlorophyll, making it especially reflective in the near-infrared spectrum. The 720nm filter blocks visible light except the deep red edge, allowing near-IR to pass. Most digital sensors can see up to ~1000nm—far beyond human vision.

In post, swapping the red and blue channels gives a subtle bluish sky (which comes out red straight from the camera), and custom white balance helps produce bright, surreal foliage.

As my son anchored to cast for trout, I noticed the contrast between pale new leaves and the dark dead snags—an eerie but beautiful scene.

While floating the Sacramento River with my son, I couldn’t resist photographing the Sundial Bridge—but not in the usual way.

This is a deep infrared shot at 830nm, far beyond visible light. No color here—just bold contrast, black skies, white foliage, and the dramatic elegance of Calatrava’s design cutting across the frame.

The Sundial Bridge is more than beautiful—it’s functional and environmentally sensitive. Designed by Santiago Calatrava and completed in 2004, it spans the river without disturbing the salmon below. Its 217-ft pylon doubles as a sundial and supports the entire structure via cable-stay, all while looking like a piece of modern sculpture.

While floating the Sacramento River with my son, I had to photograph the iconic Sundial Bridge in Redding, CA. Since it’s so often photographed, I also shot it with my infrared gear. This 830nm black-and-white image reveals deep black skies and bright white clouds and foliage—well beyond the visible spectrum. The high clouds (likely contrails) made a nice sky for this dramatic capture.

Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and completed in 2004, the 700-foot pedestrian bridge spans the river without touching it, protecting salmon habitat. Its 217-foot inclined pylon supports a cable-stay design and functions as the gnomon of a working sundial, accurate one day per year. The glass deck minimizes environmental impact and looks sleek. The bridge resembles Calatrava’s Puente del Alamillo in Spain, earning it the nickname “sister bridge” and highlighting Calatrava’s blend of art, engineering, and ecology.

The now defunct historic Water Intake Plant facility on the Sacramento River.

Photograph of the now defunct historic Water Intake Plant structure on the Sacramento River partially obscured by bare branches, with a wooden access bridge leading to the main facility in the background. The infrared image has a sepia toning, enhancing the atmosphere of decay and neglect. Two geese are standing on the rooftop of a building, set against a warm, muted background. The roof is tiled, and the overall scene has a serene and tranquil ambiance.

A striking silhouette of an old oak at Sacramento Riverbend, Tehama County, CA. The late afternoon sun highlights its twisting branches—nature’s art in motion. A reminder of the beauty in every season. 🌿🌞

I captured this frame of this big oak tree at the Sacramento Riverbend area in Tehama County California, just a few miles east of Red Bluff. I took an afternoon stroll with my son and was struck by the way the big leafless tree looked as it was backlit/silhouetted against the late day sun, showing off the interesting twists and turns of its branches.

The Sacramento Riverbend area in Tehama County, California, is a region located along the Sacramento River, known for its natural beauty and relatively rural, tranquil atmosphere. The “Mediterranean” type climate in that area makes for some very dramatic seasonal changes from very green in the late winter and spring to quite arid in summer and it can be quite interesting to check it out in all the different seasons so I try to get there a couple times a year.

I liked the colors and how they contrast with the background that appears almost entirely desaturated.

As multiple California fish species teeter on the brink of extinction, a new project threatens to push them over the edge.

The proposed Sites project—a series of diversions & dams in the Sacramento Valley—would divert more water from the Sacramento River, reducing fresh water flowing to #SFBay.

But the rivers that feed into the Bay-Delta are already dangerously over-tapped, and at a terrible price.
