Over the last few weeks my walks seem to have accidentally followed a theme of disused railway infrastructure. These photos are from the old Málaga Suburban Railways line to the east of the city, at La Cala del Moral. It makes a fine walking and cycling trail, but I'd happily give that up for a working railway.

The ghost station of San Julián in Málaga. Trains on the C1 Cercanías line pass through here without stopping.

I'm not sure when services stopped here - I have a vague and possibly unreliable memory that San Julián was still mentioned on timetables around 2011 or 2012. It is planned to demolish the halt as part of the doubling of the track on this section of the line.

Photo taken on the platform of a semi abandoned station. The installations are covered by colourful graffiti and there are holes in the canopy. A single track railway stretches into the distance through field, with mountains on the horizon.A staircase surrounded by weeds, leading up to the same platform as the previous photo. The station name, San Julián, is visible.View of the same station from outside. A dirt track leads into the distance parallel to the railway.

Palm Sunday, 7am, Málaga. A peaceful moment before the Semana Santa processions get going.

The Málaga Port Authority reflected in a window of the central station of the long departed Málaga Suburban Railway. It last functioned as a station in 1966 and is now used by a university.

Wandering along the disused tramway of Vélez-Málaga.

I posted about this tram line on my Mastodon account a few days ago (with different photos):

Definitely, it looks like the best we can expect in the 2020s is to finish doubling the remaining 3km of single track between Malaga and the airport, which wouldn't change anything for this section through Torremolinos.

A Renfe Cercanías train speeds through the early morning towards Torremolinos. This section, like much of Málaga's very busy C-1 line, is single track, a situation that is only gradually being improved.

Bad weather has kept me mostly indoors recently, so I am digging into the archives for #ThrowbackThursday.

15 years ago today I travelled by train from Dublin to Portrush. My plan was to walk the Causeway Coast the following day, but before that a dramatic evening sky gave me the chance to snap this silhouette of an out-of-season fairground ride.

In 2023, I hiked the entirety of the Colorado Trail. It took me 35 days and I climbed 30 mountains along the way. It was a transformative experience for me, and I'm in the process of finalizing a book which encapsulates it. This moment from the Trail was one of the most special of them all...

A high-altitude alpine scene with a series of reflective ponds surrounded by lush green vegetation in the foreground. Rolling hills and rugged mountain peaks rise in the background, bathed in warm, golden light from the setting or rising sun. Shadows stretch across the landscape, contrasting with the vibrant tones of the illuminated peaks. The sky is a mix of soft blues and grays, with clouds adding depth to the composition.

Lagar de Cerrado Victoria, Montes de Málaga

One there were vineyards here, but the phylloxera plague of the 1870s sent them into decline. I believe the house was inhabited until the area was reforested in the 1950s.

"Residents may raise hens, rabbits, and goats - but not pigs"

Colonia San Eugenio, Málaga - a "barrio" of workers' housing built between 1899 and 1930. This tiled panel setting out rules for residents has survived better than many of the houses, but some hints of the original design still remain as shown in the other photos. More rules of conduct are displayed beside the arch, including a warning that littering will be subject to fines of 1 to 5 pesetas.
