UX designers and practitioners acknowledge usersโ€™ different skills and try to address their needs to design better products and experiences. As HCI educators, we searched for tools to help our students to recognize that they might have different perspectives from the users they will be designing for, generating bias and assumptions in the design process. Positionality refers to the personal and social constructs that define our identity, shaping how we see and interpret the world around us, as well as the way the world sees and interprets us. Practicing positionality in HCI education is a meaningful way to reflect on our teaching approaches, our measures and expectations of studentsโ€™ performance and engagement. For the students, learning about positionality and reflexivity can have an impact on their design work and research, raising awareness on relationships of power and subjectivity. My daughter, who has had a degree in computer science for 25 years, posted this observation about ChatGPT on Facebook. It's the best description I've seen:

Something that seems fundamental to me about ChatGPT, which gets lost over and over again:
When you enter text into it, you're asking "What would a response to this sound like?"
If you put in a scientific question, and it comes back with a response citing a non-existent paper with a plausible title, using a real journal name and an author name who's written things related to your question, it's not being tricky or telling lies or doing anything at all surprising! This is what a response to that question would sound like! It did the thing!
But people keep wanting the "say something that sounds like an answer" machine to be doing something else, and believing it *is* doing something else.
It's good at generating things that sound like responses to being told it was wrong, so people think that it's engaging in introspection or looking up more information or something, but it's not, it's only, ever, saying something that sounds like the next bit of the conversation.

I wrote something on why I think the stochastic parrot metaphor should be put to rest

it identifies ways in which I suspect it is now misleading and confusing people and focusses our discourse on the wrong issues

LLMs etc are really exciting. Along with the excitement can come anxiety, esp for folks working in the many areas that are potentially impacted by LLMs.

Computing has seen big changes before, but the real-time visibility and scope of potential change here feels different.

Everyone sees everyone doing things, so they do things, and immediately share once they have a 30-second video.

Keep two things in mind at once -- this is exciting!, but there will still be plenty of problems to work on

First was a fantastic presentation by @dongng on #NLP and language variation at the #CMU Language Technologies Institute. Viewing language variation as an opportunity is essential, and the work presented here, which brings in #linguistics, is going to be an important tool in understanding societal changes. Yes, we need regulation. But as we said:

"It is indeed time to act: but the focus of our concern should not be imaginary "powerful digital minds." Instead, we should focus on the very real and very present exploitative practices of the companies claiming to build them, who are rapidly centralizing power and increasing social inequities."
