Although the #COVID pandemic has accelerated research and highlighted the benefits stemming from publicly-funded basic research, it has also revealed structural issues within #ResearchCulture globally.

Our October webinar on the lasting effects of the pandemic on research cultures is with Gemma Derrick, Associate Professor (Research Policy & Culture) at the University of Bristol, Tues 17 Oct, 1pm UK time.

How it started / how it’s going - Visiting Prague with the children, taking them to some old haunts and recreating some photos from 20 years ago.

One of my favourites cities in the world. The kids are enjoying it quite a lot too!

OA is not jargon to me and it was still not at all obvious. The description even says "To freely download and read ebook (mobi, epub) and PDF files, please visit the resources tab. "

I tried visiting the Resources tab as instructed, and it doesn't really go anywhere, just back to the same book page.

Published today in EASE journal, European Science Editing, a viewpoint from Profs. Ana Marusic and Matko Marusic on the development of their author training programs to support not only inexperienced authors, but affect the research culture in the academic and research community.

@bahar yes, indeed! was great to see you too. it's been so long, and we seem to keep missing each other on EASE meetings too, so it was great to talk through all those details too. Speak again soon!

On my way home after a fantastic few days in Amsterdam for editorial meetings with the RBMO team. It’s been a long time since my last full day (and a half) long board meeting, and I’d almost forgot how enjoyable they can be. So many little asides and details that don’t make it into o lone meetings (as much as I appreciate the efficiency of zooms)

I’ve acquired a nice long list of new tasks to add to my current projects, ready to make 2023 into an incredibly productive year.

How I like to spend my Saturday nights - delivering a webinar for the European Scientific Institute on #JournalSubmission #PeerReview and #AcademicPublishing.

Here’s me illustrating how most people fear the submission process - with the terrifying editor and army of reviewers waiting to destroy the paper, and a mention of the #Reviewer2MustBeStopped Facebook group where people can go to vent if those fears turn out to be reality.

"We do not see double-anonymised review as the progressive answer to biases in peer review. We argue for sunlight instead of shadows: open peer review, with published review reports and optional open reviewer identities. Such openness helps to expose human biases and to discuss them publicly. It also allows for innovations in scholarly communication models. This is essential to tackle biases at the root, instead of just trying to minimise their consequences." blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofsocial @tonyRH

I explain these changes here> neurochambers.blogspot.com/202

On 31 Dec my role as a Cortex editor will be ending after 10 yrs. Thank you to all the amazing people who helped create this vision for #openscience via #RegisteredReports, #VerificationReports & the #TOPGuidelines.
